Skin Types & SPF

The sun, as beautiful as it is can be deadly...the harmful rays don't seem so harmful now, but years from now when you find moles or spots on your body that you thought were nothing, can turn out to be cancer, and not all cancer is benign. Often we go to the pool or the beach, or even just outdoor for a lengthy period of time, when you do, make certain to cover up. You know that saying, pay me now or pay me later? I can attest to this,...you see, I was one of those girls with fair Irish skin in my teenage days where the only way to tan was to bask in the sun and saturate our bodies with baby oil or butter. Oh if I only knew then what I learned later in life...later when I was diagnosed with a form of melanoma cancer. I was lucky that it was caught, but it wasn't caught early enough. Had it not been for my daughter while accompanying her to the dermatologists office when she was a teenage, I might not have been so fortunate, and I would not be here today to tell you this. My daughter saved my life. My cancer was genetic and a poor judgement of the suns harmful rays that I beacame a victim of. Beauty does have its price. Regardless of ethnicity or skin color, skin that is repeatedly exposed to the sun tends to become tough and thick. The results can be leathery skin with wrinkles as early as in your 40's. What can help is using a sunscreen product with some degree of protection from UV rays, listed as the concentration on the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) numbers on the products’ labels. These sunscreen products can be made with ingredients that offer protection against UVA rays and / or other ingredients to protect against UVB rays (more harmful for sun burning than UVA rays.) The best products offer ingredients for protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

The SPF listed on the product label refers to the length of time it will take for your skin to redden after the product has been applied vs. the length of time bare skin or skin without the product would redden. To sum that up, the basic math involved in using the SPF number is like this. The SPF number tells people how much longer they can last out in the sun with protection for their skin without being burned. For example, say you would normally burn after 12 minutes of being out in the sun. You apply sunscreen, also referred to as a sun block, with an SPF of 15. This means that you should be fine for 15 times your average amount of protection time. In other words, you would be protected for up to 3 hours.

Here is the formula for calculating: 12 minutes x 15 SPF = 180 minutes (3 hours).

So in short, sunscreen products with a high SPF provide more protection against the sun. Here is a closer look at different skin types and their preferred SPFs:

Young children – For ages 6 months on up, you should apply a product with an SPF of 15 or higher to protect against both sun tanning and burning. And the product label should list protection against both UVA and UVB rays also known as the "broad-spectrum."

Skin Type - Very Fair – This skin type generally burns quickly. Tanning is rare or not common. It is recommended that sunscreen products for this skin type contain SPF 20 to 30.

Skin Type – Fair – This skin type almost always burns easily. Tanning can occur sometimes, but not much. It is recommended that sunscreen products for this skin type contain SPF 12 to 20.

Skin Type – Light – This skin type burns in the moderate range. Tanning is normally gradual, yielding a light brown shade. It is recommended that sunscreen products for this skin type contain SPF 8 to 12.

Skin Type – Medium – This skin type burns infrequently. Tanning happens much of the time, yielding a moderate brown shade. It is recommended that sunscreen products for this skin type contain SPF 4 to 8.

Skin Type – Dark – This skin type rarely burns. Tanning occurs big time, yielding a dark brown shade. It is recommended that sunscreen products for this skin type contain SPF 2 to 4.

Skin Type – Other - This skin type includes people with moles or whose close blood-relatives have a history of moles, people with skin cancer in their family histories, including melanoma, and people with very fair skin and hair. Use the highest SPF available combined with light to moderate sun exposure, as this is a high-risk category for health damage from too much UV exposure.

Note that regardless of skin type, before going out into the sun’s rays, each person should have the most suitable sunscreen product possible applied beforehand for protection against UV rays. The product should be spread fairly thick and in a uniform manner for the best possible UV protection over all areas of the skin that will be exposed to the UV rays. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is still most definitely a mysterious illness. Ever heard of it? Probably not, but if you have the symptoms, you just may have it and not even know it. To let them know what you are going through. But open communication can help pave the way for additional needed assistance. It may be difficult for you to even admit that you need help - but this is actually an essential method of gathering control of a situation that may at first appear hopeless to you.

If you have someone in your life that is acting as a primary caregiver it is also vitally important that you discuss freely with one another the different emotions that you are experiencing. Some of this may be hard to get through but it is much better than letting it build up to the point that it affects the health of you both and inhibits you even more from getting better. As I came around the corner, there was my mom was bending over the manger with glue gun in hand. Now,each of the 3 Kings, Mary, Joseph and Little Baby Jesus are safe and sound and they aren;t going anywhere!

Lets face it, pets get into things on a daily basis but at the holiday season, they tend to get into even more things...Keep close eye on them they could be allergic to ingredients in human perfumes, (we get a lot of these for gifts and tend to leave them boxed under the tree) also, air fresheners, oils and candles need to be watched...but there are pet-friendly versions of some scented products. People who use those might even find themselves wheezing less, my thought have always been, what's good for pets is good for people. NOT TRUE! My sister has a chocolate lab named Riley and she thinks she is a human,...oh she'll try to eat everything in sight and she's been caught on her hind legs pulling things off the kitchen counter top. There are foods that cats and dogs simply cannot have that can be quite harmful to them, so please, although you might want to sneak the critters something yummy, ask first or you may be handed a very expensive vet bill. No chocolate, raisins or onions for doggies! These are s deadly for them.

Loose cords can also tangle around a pet, posing a risk of strangulation or possibly capsizing heavy decorations, such as a Christmas tree.Keep open flames inaccessible. Open chimney fires, menorahs, and other flame sources can burn animals or cause a house fire if disturbed.

Remember; During holiday feasting, pets should not participate in the gluttony. Feeding a pet scraps can cause serious stomach and intestinal upset from overfeeding or more severe illnesses if the foods are toxic to animals. Great relationships just don't happen, they take years of practice and a lot of growing. True or False? As important as trust is to the well-being of your relationship, the need for your partner to be able to trust you is often times taken for granted or disregarded all together. Here’s a simple formula for building trust in your relationship—make sure that your words and actions match. Always do what you say that you’re going to do!

A Story about Sticky Boobs

Ladies, Ohhh have I got a story for you. There must be a time in your life, when you wore a dress, whether it be a cocktail dress, a clubbing dress or perhaps a sequins sleeveless blouse that you bought from a boutique where it was cut odd and at the time you had no special bra with straps that stayed hidden so you needed to use something to cover the ole' "hooters" .....because I was rasied in an old fashion home where you didn't expose yourself to complete strangers....your private parts remained private. Funnys isn't it, now I own two lingerie stores.

Lets talk about these items that you wear....Some call them "pasties" I call them "Sticky Boobs!" Easy to use, self adhesive strips that go over the nipple area to cover your girlie parts. These things work great! In fact every woman should have a set for those just in case emergencies, if not for you, for some poor woman in the ladies room trying to hide her unmentionables.

I'm describing myself here and let me tell you...I thought that they were great, but they should come with a WARNING LABEL! Never, ever, ever ladies wear these for a long period of time. These pasties, or sticky boobs as I refer to them as are a temporary fix for women. They are like a bandaid... they stick to you....and the longer you leave them on ladies, the more PAINFUL they are to take off. How do I know this, ohhhhh this experience is something that I will NEVER forget. My girlfriends laugh so hard even to this day when I tell the story, making some of them cry they alugh so hard.

A few years ago a group of us met in Las Vegas for our friend Brians 50th surprise birthday party. To celebrate, we had a private party in the Mirage at Jet Nightclub then went on to one of their elegant restaurants for a formal sit down dinner. I packed a beautiful sequin blouse and a silk black skirt full length and beautiful stilettos....but forgot a strapless bra.What was I to do? Lucky for me, my girlfriend Cindy that I went to Vegas with worked for a lingerie company at the time had a supply of anything and everything a gal could imagine if she forgot something while rushing to pack and scoot to the airport or for an overnight romantic getaway!

Cindy offered these sticky boobs to me and told me how to apply them. Easy,....piece of cake! Oh that was the greatest thing ever....Best things ever!....Until I partied, got way to drunk and came back to the room after gambling with my friend Nick playing the Wheel of Fortune where we won some $1600, then lost half of it so we gave up and walked with a lot less.....at 5am.

My blouse zipped up the back all the way to my neck so there was no way it was coming off so I figured why not just go to sleep dressed? Do you see where I am going with this story? So I did....when I woke up at 8am to that loud piercing alarm, I answered the phone. I was still drunk and still completely dressed. The alarm woke up Cindy so she got dressed to go to the pool with me. I sat up and realized that my clothes were all still on....as were the sticky boobs! I went into the bathroom, called Cindy to unzip me and when I pulled those stickies off I swear that it took off 3 layers of skin and I let out a scream that was heard all the way down to the MGM Grand! Consider this ladies, if this ever happens to you, act smarter that I did and get in the shower with them off, they come of a hell of a lot easier! Oh if I knew then what I know now!

The moral of the story is this; ...don't wear these things EVER! They should have a warning label on them. I've never experienced so much pain since childbirth, or at least it sure seemed that bad! Sure they work, but they are a bitch to take off if wore too long. Yes, they sure look pretty and sexy but they can cause some real damage! Mine were not at all this fancy, but I think you get the picture?

YUMMY Adult Strawberry Slushies!

yield: Makes 6 servings

active time: 10 minutes

total time: 30 minutes

This "Grown Up"Yum Yum Thirst quencher can be made without an ice cream maker. To do so, put 1 cup of the wine ( following in the footsteps of my grandmother, Mildred, I say, hell,...why not 2 cups?) covered, in the refrigerator; chill. Purée the remaining wine with all remaining ingredients in a food processor. Pour the mixture into ice cube trays and freeze until solid. When you’re ready to serve, just purée the ice cubes with the remaining wine in a blender. Sit back, put your feet up and savor the blend of these awesome slushies for adults only! Now these are Simply Delicious!

Ingredients:

• 3 cups hulled strawberries
• 1 750 milliliter bottle dry Riesling
• 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
• 3 tablespoons sugar

Preparation:

 

Purée strawberries, Riesling, lemon juice, and sugar in a food processor until liquefied. Process in an ice cream maker according to manufacturer's instructions. Divide among cups. Serve immediately with straws, or transfer to a container and freeze.

Marriage, Memories, Back Youngstown Ohio...Home Sweet Home

Ladies, For those of you between the ages of 18 and 21 especially who are batting the idea around or getting married soon..... Don't get all hell bent when the late 20s, 30 and over 40s crowd advises you to wait. We KNOW what we're talking about. I see SO MANY situations with married couples that got married very young and are in the midst of some serious problems. And most of them are due to the lack of maturity and life experience of the couple. Had they WAITED for a few years, they likely would not be in such difficult situations.
A marriage is about 20% bliss and about 80% of busting your hump to keep it together with ANY couple. How can I give such advice? I am a product of age 19 and married. Age 22 and two children later I was an adult way beyond my years. Go to college, finish college, and get a good education. My number one mistake was not doing this.

What happens? Nothing right now, but later in your marriage he may use it as leverage over you. You have now become the statistics of women who were even if they wanted to leave their marriages, don't because of low self esteem, no confidence, and the fear of not surviving financially without him. My daughter told me that she was going to college for "her." She said to me after my divorce; "Mom, I never want a man to make me feel like Dad made you feel." Out of the mouth of babes. She is 27 and single. She has a successful job in marketing, she travels the globe and is in NO HURRY.

 College courses and all the therapy in the world could never teach someone how to be a good parent and wife. It has to come from within. Maturity and that of, lacks in many couples which is what leads to such a high divorce rate in the 2010 survey done recently. Please don't misconstrue what I am trying to say here gals.....Take my advice as one experienced woman whose married bit the dust, and who raised two kids solo. Regrets? I have not one. I believe that what happens,...happens for a reason, and we learn from our mistakes. I had a really good marriage for a long time, but marrying at 19 certainly was not easy. No, I do not condemn this in anyway. I did it, and so can you. Confidence, courage and much determination to prove everyone wrong when everyone you knew thought your marriage would fail was ammunition enough fro me to work harder to prove everyone wrong. Well, I tried, but a marriage a is 50/50 partnership. Mine was 80/20. I just got tired of giving and giving and getting very little respect.

Ask any woman what she's looking for in a mate and she'll probably rattle off a checklist of must-haves that's totally unique to what every other woman has on her list. But there's one characteristic that's in practically every man's top five: being adventurous.

How come? All men crave, and I mean CRAVE adventure and a lot of guys (incorrectly) assume that settling down with a woman and feeling comfortable and stable in a relationship means giving up the possibility of adventure. (Hey, watch enough sitcoms and it's hard not to feel that way.) Which is why, when a woman comes along who not only makes us feel like we won't have to give up leading an adventurous life, but also inspires and encourages us to do more adventurous things with them, it's hot. Really super hot.

It all boils down to showing him that being with you will never be boring. Men never want to be bored in their relationships. Why? they have ants in their pants and never want to sit still. I refer to this as they love to play sports, etc. believe me, give them a "honey do list" and they are gone like a puff of smoke! Men desire adventurous women are never boring. Maybe it's wild sex, maybe it's trying exotic foods, maybe it's sneaking into an exclusive club, or maybe it's deciding where to go the day before you leave for vacation.What I'm saying is that you don't need to necessarily put yourself in harm's way to prove you've got an adventurous streak. Relationships are like jobs, you work all the time for a promotion.

The trick, yes ladies, always have and idea or two up your sleeve for safe keeping. This is to show him that you're open to new experiences and going out of your comfort zone. Men want fun, so do we, but sometimes we have a difficult way of expressing in, so get to know one another. Take you time...there's no fire to put out anywhere, so don't turn up the heat just yet ladies. The bottom line is that if you show a man that you have this trait, he'll cross deserts, climb mountains and fight raging rivers to catch your heart. What is most important in love and a relationship is learning how to balance love, marriage, a family and a career.

It can be done.

 My parents are celebrating their 49th wedding anniversary in two weeks and I have never seen two people so happy before. Sure they argue sometimes, but they are silly arguments that last about 10 seconds before I jump in and crack a joke calling them "kids" and tell them to knock this shit off. I look at these two amazing people that married when they were in their early 20s just as I was and say "It can happen!" Love is patience...., and believe me when I say, my mother isn't the easiest woman to get along with...My father is a saint.

Don't be in a hurry to cross the singles finish line the race over to marriage unless you are sure it is the right time, and the right thing to do. Only you know this. Trust your gut...believe me, it will save much, much heartache down the road if it doesn't feel right, or if you think you can get him to change his ways...(like I did) think again. Dream on sister...It's not going to happen, and if it does, wait for the tornado like storm later in marriage when he tells you that you ruined his life and robbed him of his best years. Men often feel as if they didn't live life enough. That's where mid-life crisis comes in and I could write a book on that one. It will surely be a blog soon! My advice to anyone you who are at that young impressionable age like I was thinking that life was a great big lala land and you'd live happily ever after,...before you tie the knot and ride off into the sunset...make certain that it is what you really want to do. If I knew then what I know now, my life would be different in many so ways.
