A lot of people conceive the plus size woman to be overweight and they totally misconstrue what a plus size woman is. Many people that are both arrogant and ignorant are out of touch with the real world. Why do 9 out of 10 assume that plus size means for fat women? 'Fat' is not a word that I am fond of nor do I use it in my vocabulary because as a young girl and into my teenage years all of my girl friends were over weight. Back then you were called over weight, nor plus size. When people use the word fat, or obese they are sending mixed messages and really need to be set straight on what a plus size definition entails.
Plus size does not mean that a woman is fat, obese, over weight, etc. Plus size could mean that a woman has a larger body build, and when I say build I mean frame type. Brooke Shields is a plus size woman but she is also a model and no one sees her as fat. In fact, most people would never know that she is even a plus size. The phrase plus size is a general term given to women who wear a certain size, or who are proportioned differently. This term varies in our country (USA) in comparison to other countries.
My big beef is that people are of different sizes and not any two women are the same size, so why are the plus size women being mistreated? We are all built differently. Our sizes could be because its in our genetics, or that we had children and our bodies have changed. Our hips blow out and our belly because a bit saggy. Child birthing is not a simple procedure. Our boobs may droop or get too big, our hips expand, and our waistline stretches. Women go through menopause and women go through depression causing the need for prescriptions that may contain drugs that can in fact also cause weight gain. Some women eat because they stress too much which leads to weight gain.
Whatever the cause, plus size women need larger clothing and with the average American woman now wearing an average size of a 14, accounting for nearly 68% of the population, this size chart is tipping the scales at retail stores, and yet retail stores are refusing to sell plus size clothing and intimates. My questions is why? Why when this is a $18 billion dollar industry is it so damn difficult to find plus size apparel and lingerie?
Retailers simply don't want to carry larger sizes thus leaving the plus size woman, (I prefer to call her the curvy gal) with limited options. They seem to think that this is like that of a phase that too shall pass. News flash; the percentage of plus size woman is increasing, not decreasing. It now becomes the chain of supply and demand. There are those stores that sell women's plus size clothes and lingerie but that comes with a cost. These retailers or even smaller boutiques know that women don't have a lot of options so they jack the prices up forcing the plus size woman to spend extra money because she loves the product and sees no other choice because so little companies carry the merchandise.
Most retail stores have taken on the snub-nose attitude stating that they don't have to carry plus size anything. The truth of the matter lies here; they are hurting themselves and losing out BIG TIME on sales because they don't want to tarnish their images.
