What is Fashion?

What is fashion? Why is it so important? Do you recall the quote that Mark Twain once wrote? It went something like this; "Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society." What does that mean you to? Personally I do believe that it is the clothes that make the man/woman. From our Simply Delicious Lingerie and undergarments to our Diesel or Rock & Republic jeans to our Jimmy Choo, Chanel, Prada, Gucci, Burberry, Spade and Dior clothing and accessories... what we wear has, for centuries, spoken volumes about who we are, what we do, and what we want. It's the truth. To some this is so shallow, nonetheless, in the world of fashion it is of the highest priority. Am I stating that everyone must own designer labels, no. It means that it is all about your class and savvy ways. Create a fashion statement and you be the superstar! It's not what you wear, rather how you wear it.

Whether Americans have dressed to make a political statement, to assert their class status, or simply to be irreverent, every style has carried a certain social meaning. This is in part because our culture has long ascribed great significance to individuals' public image. The clothing industry is one of the least sustainable industries around. Everyone buys new clothes and they shop around until they find exactly what they are searching for. Lucky for me, I have two kids, whom adore fashion and designer clothing. I have a very biased opinion...each of them are both pretty 'on style' on fashion trends and they keep me dressed very classy and fun! I get the dos and donts from them often, and I seek their help with wardrobe issues and malfunctions all the time! If there is one thing that I've learned over the years is always have back-up, or as most call it a Plan B outfit ready to go just in case you spill your coffee or drop a bagel with cream cheese down your blouse.

Fashion can also be used as a form of self-expression and adornment. People may dress to identify with a specific group of people, or with a particular performing artist they adore. Alternately, some people deliberately stray from mainstream fashion because they want to be seen as unique and one-of-a-kind. Others may choose not to follow mainstream fashion simply because it isn't important to them. If the way in which an individual dresses is not accepted by the culture and society in which the person wants to be accepted into, then the way in which the individual chooses to dress may change.

Fashion is ultimately important because it is a form of communication. You are communicating to others who you are and what is important to you, whether or not you realize it. The same way of dressing could be viewed completely different in two or more areas of the world. Therefore, it is important to be aware of what is acceptable and what is not in a given society.

What does your image say about you? For instance...
A woman's fashion personality says who she is, and it's expressed by her style. Most of us lean toward one particular type of fashion personality, although we may sometimes wear styles that are more closely related to another. What's your fashion personality? Do you view yourself as having a classic, romantic, trendy, or casual style? Think Audrey Hepburn wearing her little black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany's...in my personal opinion, wow! Now that's classic fashion. Women who have a classic fashion personality love timeless fashion designs--tailored trousers; single-breasted, semi-fitted jackets; sleek pumps. Because classic style stands the test of time well, the classic fashion personality type is often able to wear her clothing and fashion accessories for years. Wow! The way she dressed made a statement. This was the classic fashion personality.

What about romantic fashion personality? Women who have a romantic fashion personality type can imagine themselves in a Victorian setting wearing long, ground-sweeping hoop skirts. Ruffles, frills, lace, and other feminine details are all on their radar screens. Because the romantic fashion personality takes her style influence from the past, she sometimes looks a bit out of place in the modern world, but on the plus side, hers is the most feminine way of dressing and the one that will draw in the eyes of someone who sees her potential worth.

What about the trendy fashion personality? I say bring it on! It's all about the latest, newest, cutting-edge fashion designs in both clothing and accessories. These all catch the attention of the woman with a trendy fashion personality, and they very well should, fashion is quite important and we all want to dress to the 9's. Her friends are likely to consult her when it comes to fashion because they know she's always on top of the trends, and she's shopping for the newest styles before they even arrive in the stores.

Hello? What about the casual, comfy fashion trendy gal?  Well, they say that comfy is the mantra of the woman with a casual fashion personality. I find a lot of truth in that statement. She wants to live her life free of the restrictions of fashion, so she avoids high heels and shapewear that sucks her flab or curves in like the plague and may not even own a dress. Hey, I say to each his own. She may be a bit confused by style, but, on the other hand, she'll never be at the mercy of fashion. Tiptoeing around on six-inch stilettos is definitely not her idea of fun; so what is exactly? That's a silly question; how about flip-flops and sneakers? These are much more to her liking, and so much more comfortable.

The bottom line is simple....To some people, it's not always about being on your game and always looking stunning,...for some it is fashion enough just getting dressed in the morning and feeling good about themselves. The confidence you carry with each step you take is what makes you...YOU~

No Second Chances to Make First Impressions

We've all heard that saying 'you only get one chance to make a first impression?' Right? If you haven't pay close attention to what I'm about to say for this could make, or break a good thing. There are do's and don'ts when it comes to approaching women for the first time. The following contains just a few helpful tips to assist all the beloved men who sometimes don't know any better than to scratch themselves in public or display a complete lack of chivalry toward women. If the following "don'ts" apply to you, then put forth an effort to rectify your behavior so that women everywhere may come to respect you. I only have 2 suggestions boys... These are the make it or break it deal for 75% of the women so don't be an idiot!

watch what comes out of your mouth!

Think long and hard about what you say before you say it boys...Offensive hygiene aside, men also have a habit of coming up with corny, sometimes raunchy useless pick-up lines that never work on the majority of able-bodied sound-minded women. Which adolescent-minded man thought of "I wanna bang you into next week"? Did the man who first came up with this line really believe that a woman would appreciate this and reciprocate? If you think the answer is yes, you have even bigger problems than I thought.

Then, there's the bad ass type man who thinks that the ruder and more arrogant an aura he emits, the more likely women will somehow become attracted to him. What turnip truck did you fall off of when you smacked your head? So perhaps calling a woman a bitch is acceptable in a rap song for now, but it is definitely not sanctioned when in the midst of trying to seduce a potential horizontal mambo partner, so sweet cheeks, don't even think about it! You are pathetic if you think that you can get a woman's interest and even more nuts if you think she wants to go out with you.

stop flaunting your cash...

It's 2012 and most women that I know have good jobs and make a good living, so please...daddy warbucks, silence your money clip. Don't know what that means? Let me spell it out for you then...Oh yes, there's the man who believes that all his self-worth and dignity lies in his snakeskin Armani wallet, his Prada belt or his Gucci shoes. Some women will probably be more willing and  accepting of your company upon eye contact with your wad, and I don't mean the one-eyed monster in your trousers. But if money is all you have to offer, then eventually you'll be out of a woman... and a few hundred/thousand dollars. Men who pull out their roll of bills to impress women are usually the first ones to complain that women are gold-diggers. Get real guys... if you insist upon flaunting your cash, then isn't it logical for women to spot that instantly and want to spend it? On the contrary to what you all may think, most women that I know of would much rather have a good man that earns an honest living and works hard than an arrogant flamboyant jerk who thinks he can buy his way into your G-string. Pull your head out of the sand lover boy, and get a reality check.

Starting the Day Off on the Wrong Foot?

Have you ever heard that term "I woke up on the wrong side of the bed" or "Starting the day on the wrong foot?" These are warning signs of having a bad day...Welcome to my world! Today, unfortunately, I began mine...I woke up with a headache. A bad one at that I might add. I suffer migraines and this is all so new to me. They began a few years ago shortly after I relocated to Houston, Texas. I saw neurologist after neurologist. Most of them just wanted to dope me up and send me on my way after the handed me (a no health insurance patient) a whopper bill for $450 a visit and said..."see you in two weeks, let us know how the meds are working?" I'm sorry but "WTF?" They never took the time to try to understand what caused me to feel this was after being so healthy even after my cancer.

....And you wonder why people hate doctors? Hey, this story gets better. One my last shred of hope and in pain so severely that I could no longer operate an automobile because the dizzy and faint spells occurred, I met a neurologist who took the time to get to know me. My routines, my eating habits, and my physical and mental history. No one ever asked in detail like this guy did, and I was grateful! With meds, and a change in my diet, I now only suffer these headache occasionally and now I know when they are creeping up on me! I still dislike going to see the doctor, but even I know when not to push my limits.

I no longer allow this pain to control my life. I decided that I was not going to give up many things that I liked because they made me sick....so Mr Gucci, you should have me as your spokes person because even when the physician told me that my perfume was too strong and was annoying my senses,...I said; "Stop wearing my Gucci "Envy?" Never! I'd rather be ill and smell good than feel great and not have that wonderful scent on me.

Today, along with starting my day on the wrong foot it happened....I showered to make my head feel better. The hot water really helps. After getting out of the shower, I dried my hair and as I was turning around to unplug the hairdryer it happened....

The cord caught my bottle of Gucci Envy on the bathroom counter and before I could grab it....the bottle broke and my floor was saturated in it. What does one do? Think FAST! Ohhhh how I cried. Then I refused to wipe it up and lose it....so like the cheap woman I am, I scooped it into a bottle, or what little I could, and then I used a towelette to pick up the rest.

This story gets better....you have to know me first of all, as my family and friends do...in order to get the real humor of this story...imagine a full grown woman rolling around her bathroom floor soaking up the perfume she lost when the bottle hit the floor. Ok, now multiply that strong scent (for those of you who wear or know Gucci, you know what I'm talking about...) times ohhhh I don't know like x 1000 and imagine a what a woman might smell like with that much Gucci on her 5'5 140 pound body? YIKES!!!!!  Honestly, you can smell me a mile away!

There was no way in hell I was going to throw that away,...nope, not so fast. Did I mention the bottle was practically full, so that made it even worse...my bad day just got worse. My suggestion is if you are anywhere in Youngstown Ohio and as far away as Cleveland and you smell something with a strong scent and a wonderful aroma? It's just me passing thru!

Listen, there is a moral to this story, even if you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, or start the day off on the wrong foot, or you walk the dog only to step in his pile of shit,...think of me...I came out smelling like a rose...or Gucci Envy. Might I suggest though Mr Gucci, some sort of bottles that are shatter-proof for gals on the go like myself?

So ask yourself? Are you; Having a bad day?

Your attitude can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Today it took everything I had in me to keep it my friend. It can take you to levels you never thought possible, or it can be the single most limiting element in your life. Your attitude — good or bad — is contagious. It spreads to your coworkers, your family, and especially your clients, affecting everything you do.

Having a bad attitude will cost you sales, business, friends, time, and energy. You will never make it to the top of your game if you consistently have "stinkin' thinkin'." Of course, everyone has bad days and gets down once in a while. Still, learn to control your attitude and your consistent thoughts and beliefs will always prevail. Turn something bad into something good like I did, and remember, "Shit happens" it's how you learn to deal with it that makes up a stronger person.
