Tighten the Tush

Ask anyone what they would like to improve on their body and my guess would be their ass. Oh for some there are smaller issues that they have worth their physique, nonetheless, many women that I know struggle with the tush. For some, it’s too flat; for others, too saggy. For many others, like myself, they think it’s just way too big. For many women, it is flabby, and it shakes more than jello jigglers. A variety of complaints indicate that the majority of people dislike the way their buttocks appear. If this is the case, there is something that one can do to change the buttocks appearance.

Fortunately the rear end is one of the easiest muscles to firm up and will respond to exercise very quickly, usually within three weeks. Shaping up the buttocks is not just about looks – a strong and toned rear end can make your daily tasks easier as well as increasing your calorie burn during cardiovascular exercise. The muscles in the buttocks are used to walking, sitting, standing, and many more movements. When your backside is powerful and well-developed, you will be able to move better through the day since your muscles can respond to your body’s needs better than ever before.

For most people, you probably did not know that muscles in the buttocks are actually considered part of the lower back? When your gluteal muscles are strong and fit, they can do a much better job of supporting your body throughout your challenging days.

Before you embark on a program to build a better butt, it’s important to assess your own attitude. Do you consider your back end to be a nuisance because of its shape? What are your reasons for changing it? While most  cultures that I am aware of consider the tush to be sacred, measurement is placed on the sexual appeal on the shape, size and firmness of buttocks, your goal should be to appreciate what you have regardless of condition. My grandmother used to say that if god wanted you to have it, he'd give it to you...my question always was; "why the ass?" For you ladies who think you were cursed with the ass, behold my friend...one day someone will truly appreciate it, for she said that some day I would appreciate mine. Most of us are very unaware of how your buttocks are working for you every moment, even when you’re sitting, to keep your body centered and balanced. Work to change your butt because you want the strongest, healthiest body you can have. If your butt fills out your jeans better than ever, that’s great, but let the change be for the sake of your body.

So you want to redefine your tush? No problem...If you are overweight, you will still see results but be aware that burning calories through aerobic exercise will reveal more of your newly firm buttocks. Because the muscle group is so large and is used almost constantly, it responds quickly to conditioning exercises. Most people see a difference within three weeks and many actually feel the difference in a matter of days. Shaping your butt muscles is high on the wish list when women start with a personal trainer. Every woman wants a nice firm butt. The butt area is however also the so called problem area for a lot of women. Women carry a lot of fat deposits in this area because it serves them during their childbearing years. Female bodies are not very willing to give up these fat cells, so women really need to need to choose the right exercises and workouts to trim and tone the gluteus maximus! A shapely bottom is a wonder to behold. Are you ready to start transforming your tush today?

The exercises below are all terrific for firming and strengthening the gluteal muscles. Be sure to maintain good posture with your back straight and shoulders back when preforming these exercises. It is suggested to work on your gluteal muscles three to four times a week and you will be amazed and pleasantly surprised at the fast response and amazing muscle tone that quickly becomes evident.

Squats: This exercise seems to be the easiest to do and you can do it anywhere. You don't need to be in an expensive gym. You can do it while your cooking dinner, watching television or even drying your hair. Prepare for squats by standing about six inches in front of a straight-back chair with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. You may want to put your hands on your hips or raise them in front as you squat. Begin to slowly lower your body backwards as though you were going to sit down in the chair. When you feel your buttocks just barely touch, slowly stand up. Don't try to over do this as you may think that it's not doing anything but it is...you just aren't realizing it yet.

This exercise is quite vital to maintain excellent posture during squats to get the maximum benefit from the movement. Use your heels as the primary weight-bearers and imagine yourself pushing down through the heels to the floor. Because the gluteus maximus is so large, it requires plenty of calories to fuel its movement. Incorporating squats into an aerobic exercise is a powerful way to torch even more calories.

Want to try something else? How about leg presses?

Leg Press: Use the leg press machine at the gym for this exercise. If the machine is weight-based, adjust the weights to the appropriate level. If it is hydraulic-based, simply sit down and position your feet. You should place your body in the seat so that you are sitting up with good posture. Your legs should reach the pressing platform without stretching or feeling uncomfortable. Place the entire soles of both feet against the platform and slowly push away. When you have extended your legs almost fully, slowly allow the weight to push your legs back.Performing this exercise slowly is the key to building up strength. Be sure to avoid using only the balls of your feet since that builds the calf muscles rather than the buttocks and thighs. Before too long, if you follow the simple exercises noted, you too can have a nice tight tush in no time!

Menopause...The Symptoms and Relief

I know that so many of you ask yourselves the same question that I did... Menopause, really? I guess I always felt so young and vibrant. I still do, so then why does menopause make me feel like I've just aged? For me, I should have seen it coming, in fact, about 5 years ago it all started but like everything else in my life, it just took it's sweet old time arriving and has yet to exit the building. The hot flashes are horrible, although the girls at work laugh, and my dad thinks I am crazy. Like the Katy Perry song, I'm "Hot & Cold" all the time. One minute I'm under the covers and the next I am stripping my clothes off because it's hotter than hell in here. So what is menopause? It is simple...the onset of menopause signals the ending of a woman's reproductive cycle. I'm happy about that but really is all this crap necessary? Listen, I am going to be so glad to be rid of that...good ridden, but at the moment, my body is trying to understand what is happening to me. My mom and grandmothers went through it in their very early 40s. I didn't get so lucky. I guess my body is stubborn and is taking it's sweet old time. I am a very patient woman but this is pushing my buttons a bit.

Menopause actually begins after the women's last period. Guys if you don't understand this you might want to read up now because if you are in a relationship with a women experiencing this or if you are married to one you need to know that side effects so that you can run when her mind turns crazy! LOL... This event marks the culmination of several years of peri-menopausal changes during which hormones secreted by the ovaries (estrogen and progesterone) gradually decline. Peri- and menopausal symptoms vary considerably from person to person. Asians are known to have few to no symptoms other than irregular menses. Western women, however, have much higher incidences of body changes such as hot flashes, night sweats, reduced libido, forgetfulness, heart palpitations, loss of bladder control, frequent urination, and joint pains, to name a few. For some, these symptoms are like a "living hell." All women go through menopause. There is no escape for anyone. Once menopause arrives the body's internal production of estrogen and progesterone stops altogether for that woman.

Women can no longer depend on their own body to produce these two hormones to protect themselves against osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. The result to their health can be devastating. The symptoms of menopause include night sweats, mood swings, depression, hot flashes, sagging breast, vaginal dryness, osteoporosis, fibrocystic lumps, night sweats, painful intercourse, and memory problem. Lucky for me it's just hot flashes and night sweats. It could be worse...I could have lost my sex drive. It's been so long since I've used it that if I did lose it, I'd be the last one to know. I think we're good in that department. The girls are still perky, and even if there were dryness, I brought enough lubricants home from the lingerie show in Las Vegas to keep the state of Ohio wet for days.

Let's get a bit technical now shall we: What exactly are the chemicals and what is going on with your body?

Progesterone is a biochemical precursor to estrogen. Progesterone cream alone is sufficient to restore estrogen balance and relief many of the symptoms. If after 3 months of progesterone cream, proper diet, nutritional supplementation of magnesium and B6 do not relive the symptoms, then low-dose natural estrogen may be considered. 2.5 mg of natural tri-estrogen cream (10% estrone, 10% estradiol, and 80% estriol) provides the equivalent action of 0.625-conjugated estrogen such as Premarin. Herbs like black cohosh have weak estrogenic effect and may be considered as well. Osteoporosis is the loss of bone density, leading to fractures. Post-menopausal women low in estrogen have a 25% chance of serious bone loss and fracture. The lifetime risk of hip fracture approaches 30% for those afflicted with osteoporosis, resulting in the loss of independent living. Many will die from their injuries. Estrogen increases pliability of blood vessels, lowers "bad" LDL-cholesterol, increases "good" HDL-cholesterol, and decreases platelet aggregation that leads to blood clots. These protective properties of estrogen result in pre-menopausal women having a lower risk of heart disease than either men, or post-menopausal women. Post-menopausal women are just as vulnerable to heart disease as men of the same age. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women over 45 years of age.

Estrogen actually is not a single hormone but a trio of hormones working together. The three components of estrogen are: estrone, estradial, and estriol. In healthy young women, the typical mix approximates 15/15/70 percent respectively. This is the combination worked out by Mother Nature to be optimum for human females. Out of the three components of estrogen, estrone and estradiol are pro-cancer, while estriol is anti-cancer. Synthetic estrogen such as Premarinâ contains the pro-cancer components of estrogen (estrone and estradiol) in higher proportions compared to estriol. Progesterone is made from pregnenolone, which in turn comes from cholesterol. Production occurs at several places. In the women, it is primarily made in the ovaries just before ovulation and increasing rapidly after ovulation. Functionally, progesterone acts as an antagonist (opposite to) to estrogen. For example, estrogen stimulates breast cysts while progesterone protects against breast cysts. Estrogen enhances salt and water retention while progesterone is a natural diuretic. Estrogen has been associated with breast and endometrial cancer, while progesterone has cancer preventive effect.

If you are like me and you are suffering this, try to make the best of it...for this too shall pass.

Side Affects, Risks and Weight Gain from the "Pill"

There are several reason today why woman take birth control pills other than the normal reason for safe sex. I hear this discussed by so many women day in and day out...the pill and weight gain. Is there any truth to this matter and if so why do women tend to get increased appetites and pack on pounds? Well, lets look at this in a medical perspective shall we? Birth control pills contain synthetic hormones which go straight to the pituitary glands. Once there, the synthetic hormones block the production of LH and FSH hormones. This prevents the body the natural growth of the egg and ovulation. Birth control pills based on estrogen often lead to water retention. The amount of fluid that is retained is directly proportional with the quantity of estrogen found in the pill.

The explanation is given by the fact that estrogen directly stimulates several compounds from the kidneys that lead to fluid retention. The compounds are known as renin-angiotensin. Oral contraceptives that contain around 20 mcg of estrogen are recommended for women who want to avoid fluid retention. Such a low concentration is known to be safe, according to several studies. If the gained weight exceeds 5 percent of the body weight, this may indicate that you have either an abnormal glucose metabolism or insulin resistance.

Besides changing the type of oral contraceptive that you take, you can also follow a diet that is low in carbohydrates, as these are the main cause of weight gain when you have an unusual glucose metabolism. By taking these measures, you may be able to avoid gaining extra pounds. Is it frustrating to those women whom start gaining weight out of the blue when they've never done so before? You bet it is. Our bodies are going through a real change the first 3 months or so (at the very least) from this new drug in your system. You feel like a yo-yo. Your happy, then sad, then hungry, and nauseous. What's a gal to do? Hang in there...it gets better, and if it does not or if you begin developing signs of other issues with your body talk to your doctor immediately. Not all birth control pills are right for each person. There are other forms of contraception that will work. Do you find yourself eating and then less than a few hours later eating again, and again? Many women say that they do. It happens. Often we try to say no but our body says YES!

According to some doctors and medical practitioners, birth control pills can cause an increase of appetite, at least to some women. But studies have shown that this situation is more of an exception rather than the rule. Another perception of feeling bloated or fat when one is taking the pill is that the body is said to hold more water when it is on pill compared to when it is not. There is nothing worse than feeling like you are going to pop out of your pants. If you are/were anything like myself and my sister, we gained 5-7 lbs in water weight gain prior to our cycle. Isn't that peachy? Moody, PMS, and water weight gain. No wonder we get so darn cranky at times. Men have NO idea what we go through, and if they did, they would make a more conscious effort to comfort us.

I think that I can speak for most all gals when I say that women are very conscious of their weight. Ask any man who made the wrong move of commenting on a women's weight. I'm sure it did not go over well at all. Our bodies are experiencing a number of changes and until we work through them- we suffer. This consciousness or even subconscious wariness of gaining pounds might contribute to false admittance or observations that birth control pills cause weight gain. Women often fear the added pounds. Because of this fear women don't take or totally avoid taking birth control pills.Although some other methods are quite effective, the pill is still the better option with 99.7% chance of preventing pregnancies. Women should stop worrying about something that isn't real or they will really begin to worry about weight gain when they get pregnant and after giving birth. These two situations pack more weight related issues than what they have now with birth control pills.

Weight gain and weight control is all about balance. A balance diet combined with a balanced body work-out. That's the ideal way of living. You prevent any significant weight gain by eating healthy and exercising.

How do birth control pills affect your risk of cancer? Does it control levels of your cholesterol? Can it effect your blood pressure?

First things first...Scientific evidence suggests using birth control pills for longer periods of time increases your risk of some cancers, such as cervical cancer and liver cancer, but it also decreases your risk of other types of cancer, including ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer. The effect of birth control pills on breast cancer risk isn't quite clear. However, some studies do show a link between pill use and breast cancer. Key factors seem to be how many years you take the pill and how recently you last used the pill.

Birth control pills can affect cholesterol levels. How much of an effect depends on the type of pill you're taking and what concentration of estrogen or progestin it contains. Birth control pills with more estrogen can have a slightly beneficial overall effect on your blood lipid levels. In general, though, the changes aren't significant and don't affect your overall health. Birth control pills may slightly increase blood pressure. If you take birth control pills, have your blood pressure checked regularly. If you already have high blood pressure, talk with your doctor about whether you should consider an alternative form of birth control

Here's something else to digest; Cardiac Arrhythmia, sometimes called palpitations of the heart, is an irregular heartbeat. Did you know that hormonal imbalances can be the cause of arrhythmia?  In recent studies, this occurred with patients who were on birth control pills. So if you suspect this to be your problem, you might want to try a three-month test without birth control pills.

The bottom line is this; there are so easy solutions. I cannot promise anyone that you will or won't have side affects to the pill. Every woman is different and no two bodies are one in the same. There is no magic gum you can take to prevent pregnancy, to act as a contraceptive or to make anything easier. If there were, we'd all be chewing it! Your body knows what is best for you, so please...listen to it. If you feel miserable or sick, or if you get too emotional and moody, or if you begin gaining more than just  a few pounds, ask why? Take care of yourself...your body is your house, and it's the only one you'll ever have!

Do You Have Cellulite?

Cellulite – The worst thing that any woman could have and experience that's so damn hard to get rid of....So what it is exactly, and how does one get it? It’s that ugly little problem that causes your skin to wrinkle up and look like an orange peel. Has it happened to you? Hey listen, I'm, 48 not a dinosaur. I want to stay looking good, not gross and frumpy...you should too. So what its it and how the hell do we get rid of it? Oh if there were a magic pill for this I would own the patent to it for sure! No one is 100 percent sure what causes cellulite, but it appears to originate from our own female hormone. In fact, nearly 98% of girls develop at least a small amount of cellulite after reaching puberty. Those back-stabbing hormones of ours seem to be triggered during adolescence, when they begin laying down fat, particularly in the hips and the thighs, by enlarging cells, and let me tell you...it gets worse as we age. Lymph fluids then gradually pass through the tissue and accumulate in areas with poor circulation. The fat then becomes compressed and starts to harden into lumps. Over time, these lumps are visible through the skin. As we get older, our skin and hormones continue to change and it can get worse. Isn't that just great?

Some experts believe that certain lifestyle factors, such as lack of exercise and taking in high levels of toxins, like alcohol and coffee, increase the likelihood of developing cellulite. Bearing this in mind, the best way to treat cellulite is to live a healthy lifestyle and avoid getting it altogether. Me go a day without a can of COKE? Are you serious?

Of course, avoiding getting cellulite isn’t necessarily all that easy. For some women, developing cellulite is simply the result of genetics, a part of the aging process, or due to pregnancy. Furthermore, many of us already have it and just want to know how to get rid of it.

One way to get rid of cellulite is through exercise. Sitting for long periods of time decreases our body’s circulation. In fact, the most stubborn cellulite deposits are often located right in the area where the leg meets the chair while sitting, most likely because this is the area where the circulation was cut off.
A sluggish circulatory makes it more difficult for the blood and the lymphatic system to send oxygen around the system and to remove toxins. Therefore, regular exercise that can is brisk, yet gentle, is one way to treat cellulite. Swimming and walking are great ways to do this.

Cellulite can also be treated with skin brushing and massage. These forms of treatment help to clear and cleanse the lymphatic system by speeding up circulation. This, in turn, gets rid of cellulite that has been building up for a long time in the body cells. A wooden brush with a long handle is needed for skin brushing. To perform skin brushing successfully, the brushing should be done in an upward direction with firm sweeping strokes. The process should begin at the soles of the feet and gradually move upward on the body. Special attention should be paid to areas that are prone to cellulite. In these areas, the brush strokes should follow a small, circular pattern. Over brushing, however, can irritate the skin and cause reddening.

Weight loss and drinking plenty of water can also help in treating cellulite. Accumulated toxins need to be flushed from the system in order to restore skin tone. The liver, in particular, needs to be cleansed as its job is to help the body filter out toxins. In addition, weight gain will only cause cellulite to worsen. On the other hand, weight loss in a person who is overweight can help decrease the appearance of cellulite. In addition to these methods, there are several creams and lotions available on the market that claim to aid in the reduction of cellulite. Some of these creams can be costly and have little proven effect on the reduction of cellulite.

A more invasive means of treating cellulite is the use of surgery. Cellulite treatment surgeries, such as liposuction, are available which are capable of removing inches of collected fatty tissue from various parts of the body, including the abdomen, legs, arms, back, neck, and face. Who has the monies for this? Its not covered by insurance because its cosmetic. Isn't that just peachy?

Fact: Liposuction does not, however, change the structure of the skin. Therefore, it does not eliminate cellulite forever. In addition, as with any surgery, liposuction has risks. Also, it will not result in the “perfect” body – and it’s not cheap, either. Therefore, it is important to become well-educated about cellulite treatment surgeries before plunging into this form of cellulite treatment.

The dreaded cellulite is very unattractive and no woman is happy to discover a new deposit on her body. Therefore, the best line of defense is prevention – drink plenty of water and exercise regularly to keep your circulation flowing and your body free of toxins. This may help. If anyone has a better idea or more tips, please share them with me so that I can pass them on to other women.
