Shake the Weight Before Bikini Weather...

It sneaks up on us…one day its doom and gloom weather outside and the next…summer is just around the corner. Summer meaning "bikini weather!"Why is it that we feel good about ourselves throughout the year until right about now and then we realize that within a few short months we’ll be in bathing suits and beachwear? What happens? Well, we start to feel a bit insecure with what we are wearing and how we look? Is this normal? Being a woman, YES, it is very normal because we all worry about this issue. We feel fat, flabby, or we feel jiggly and then we turn around and look at ourselves in the mirror (or worse, in a three way mirror) and see more rolls than Mr. Tootsie on our tummy and waistline, cottage cheese on our legs and tushy. Talk about feeling overwhelmed...Good news! You can turn those droopy, jiggly cottage cheese days around and look good and feel great soon!

Don’t like exercise? Neither do I, but you can lose weight in just a few months for summer without a gym or even heavy dieting. Its just a few short rules that apply and if you want to look sexy you need to pay attention here…and if you are eating something that isn’t good for you right now while you are reading this…PUT IT DOWN and WALK AWAY from it!
Follow these easy-to-implement weight loss tips to help you shed those last 10 pounds before summertime:
1. Get active. What does this mean? Olivia Newton John once sang ‘lets get physical’ and I mean that in an exercising kind of way. Don't have money for the gym? Don't need it. Go to Kmart, or Target or Walmart, or Toys 'R'Us and buy yourself a hula hoop! Nothing shakes the inches and pounds off better than the hoop and it's fun! Your new goal from here on out should be to develop healthy habits. By practicing these, not only do you can burn calories without being strapped to an elliptical machine or device of some sort rather you are choosing habits that are simple to maintain, enjoyable, and productive.
•   Take the dog for a nice walk rather than opening the door and letting him out into the yard. Its better for you. Instead of stopping at the coffee shop in your car every morning, wake up fifteen minutes earlier to jog there before getting ready for work. Or get on your treadmill and run for 15 minutes.
•   Pick activities that relate to your life.  Take the dog for a walk, jog to the coffee shop, or jump rope…When you feel dedicated, your efforts are less likely to stagnate. If you like to shop, park your car further away from the mall and take those extra added steps to get to the main door. If you live in a city such as NYC like my kids do, walking is pretty much the only way of life and you see many people in shape there because they have to walk and exercise is terrific for your body! Remember, be positive!
•   Don’t try to do it alone...Ask someone else to join in! When there are two, or more, it makes it more fun! Getting an easygoing workout partner(s) might not be as easy as you think, but then again, if their goals are the same as yours it might be an easier task and it is a great way to keep activity levels up. Grab a neighbor and walk to the park every day. I see women walking on my street together every morning and every evening. You'll be amazed at how much you enjoy it and you’ll be more excited to see just how many calories you'll burn!
2. Dine in or dine out by eating delicious summer time meals. Summery meals are characterized by being refreshing, simple, tasty, and healthy. Even though summer is only peeking through the clouds right now, try to adapt to a summery diet of fruit bowls, spinach salads, grilled salmon, vegetable kebabs and other fresh options. Say no to the starchy high cholesterol foods. You can choose to eat these at home or by going out. If you go out just be careful and pay attention to what the foods are made with. Ask someone if you don’t see it listed on the menu.
•   It's okay to crave foods of sugar. Hey, we all love the sweets and goodies, but some choices are better than others. It's best to feed your sweet tooth now in order to avoid a binge later. Sweet treats like watermelon, frozen yogurt and grape tomatoes all make for summery, healthy, and satisfying snacks with low, low calories.
•   Use the grill. I LOVE GRILLING! To grill it is much better than to fry it. If you must fry, spray your pan with PAM or some kind of no-stick spray with little or zero calories. If you're making a Chicken Caesar salad, grill the chicken rather than simply baking or cooking in a pan. This adds visual interest and a nice smoky taste. You can also grill almost any vegetables that are going into the salad. Throw on some seasoning like Mrs. Dash or anything that adds some zest to the meal and gives it a little kick!
•   Prep your meals in advance. Plan your meals out. Make a schedule/planner for a week in advance and purchase what you'll need for those meals, that way you'll be less likely to buy something 'bad for you' if you are tempted to go into the grocery store for something every day.You main dishes such as salads and fruits are easy to prepare ahead and store in an airtight container. If you desire meats…try marinating your meat and fish rather than cooking it ahead because it can lose its moisture once cooked.

3. Wear your swimwear 24/7. Yup, that’s right, you heard me. Use it as a constant reminder. Wearing your bikini or swim trunks underneath your clothing is a simple and effective way to motivate yourself to stick to any diet, fitness, and weight loss goals you've set. If that is a bit much for you… then simply just try it on every day.
•   If you're not seeing the results you want to see, you'll be motivated to work harder. Push yourself to the limits. However, if you are seeing results, you'll be encouraged to increase your efforts because you like what you see and want more of it!
•   If you're uncomfy wearing a bikini, like so many women today are…choose the next best thing. Wear your "thin" summer clothes. Or purchase your ideal summer outfit in a realistic target size. Use this outfit as inspiration. The goal is to fit into it comfortably by the start of summertime.
•   Window-shopping is my favorite thing to do and it is also a good motivator. Sure you can go out and shop for ideas of what you might want to wear to feel good and sexy….but if you wish to take that one step further, head to your favorite  website such as; Simply Delicious Lingerie or Simply Luscious Lingerie. Sexy starts underneath your clothes with fun intimate apparel that makes you feel confident about who you are! Then, fill your shopping cart with items that will look fabulous on your smoking hot summer body! If you feel amazing in them then your partner, lover, boyfriend or spouse will love them as well! You can pretend-spend as much as you want without shelling out a dime until you select what you think will make you shine like a rock star in beauty!

Get Healthy...Build Your Body

Being healthy means watching what you eat and choosing the right foods. Getting in shape and trying to stay fit is not at all an easy task, and it can get expensive...but it doesn't have to! Like most routines, this article is not intended to be a “one size fits all.” Take from it what you will as non-professional advice from a woman who has always carried an extra 10 pounds on her at least. I kept telling people it was 'baby fat' until my daughter said to me one day; "Mom, I'm 21, it's not baby fat any longer!"

It was then that I realized I was hiding behind the childbirth of my two kids who were now college age and could no longer use the weight gain as an excuse. It wasn't until then that I decided it was time to get in shape and watch what I ate, but even then I was sloppy at it. Could it be more difficult? Oh you bet it could...then menopause set in..as if things weren't bad enough, now this? Hot flashes, weight gain again,..was this all necessary? I work hard to watch what goes into my mouth and I try to stay on a general exercise routine. Not everyone has the same body, and not everyone has good health, so please...seek the advice of your physician first and know that is most important is your health and well being. In that light, consider the following list that I found to be quite helpful:
  • Before beginning any serious weight lifting or body building regimen, consult your physician. Muscles are not built over night..it takes time and hard work to achieve a great body. What am I trying to say? You won't turn into Hercules over night!

  • Set your goals. What will make you happy? Define what you expect to achieve with your new bodybuilding campaign within a realistic time frame. If you create goals that are unattainable you are setting yourself up for failure. You can become bored, disappointed and disillusioned to the point where you may give up. This is a very sad outcome to what might have been the best decision of your life. Don’t sell yourself short. Set your long term goals, of course, but also set short term goals that are achievable. And, don’t forget to reward yourself when you do achieve them.

  • Consider the costs. If you don’t already have a budget, create one. Eating healthy is not cheap. If you live in good climates like I have in Houston TX, I had a garden from April through November. I had greens and such at hand all the time. If you don't have access to a garden 24/7, determine what amount of discretionary funds you have available for your bodybuilding program. This will determine whether you can afford to have a home gym or if your needs would better be served by joining a club. Joining a club is still a good short term introduction before spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on equipment that might not be appropriate for your needs.

  • Don’t forget some of the low cost alternatives to purchasing your bodybuilding equipment. If used equipment is still functional why spend the extra dollars just for a little glitz! Good, brand name used equipment is every bit as functional as something right off a showroom floor. If you can't afford the fancy schmancy gym equipment...get an exercise ball and a couple of 15 pound weights like I did. They work just as well and you work just as many muscles!

  • Consider combining a home gym along with a membership in a public facility. Purchase less expensive free weight equipment for use at home and join a gym to have access to the more expensive equipment. You can design your entire workout routines around a combination such as this. No money for a gym? Invest $9.99 in a DVD called Yoga Booty Ballet. I LOVE IT....and like milk, it does your body good!

  • Eat healthy! This can’t be stressed enough. The only true bodybuilding aids are good nutrition. Ok so I cheat sometimes...who doesn't? Just be careful, and try to stick to the proper nutrition schedule. I've found that when I tell myself I can't have something, I cheat and eat it 'because I can' ....my friends, we're only cheating on ourselves when we do this. Need help? Consult a licensed dietician. Watch your local community calendar for free seminars on diet and nutrition. Learn all you can about what nature freely provides that can help you to develop a healthy diet.

  • If you choose to use dietary supplements, make certain that you know what you are putting in your body. Follow the packaging guidelines I outlined previously. Ask your physician for his/her recommendations based on the regimen you have selected. No friend, coach or acquaintance can take the place of your physician and what works for one person may not at all work for someone else. In fact, you may even investigate finding a physician who specializes in sports wellness.

  • Be kind to yourself. Yes, it’s important to push to achieve your goals, but it’s very easy to tip the scales in the other direction and create a nightmare for yourself. Obsessive, compulsive behaviors are not conducive to a healthy bodybuilding lifestyle. Someone once told me that your body is your house, and my friend...it's the only one you'll ever have, so please, take care of it! Be happy being YOU and be proud of what you have accomplished! When you get to your desired weight, go shopping at www.SimplyDeliciousLingerie.com for a sexy new babydoll, bedroom costume or teddy. We have hundreds of pieces of women's intimate apparel to choose from!

Rest, Relax and Reboot Your Body!

It is truly unfortunate, but we all know that  in today’s society it is far too common for adults to drag day after day, lacking the sleep their bodies desperately need. Let's face it, we don't always have time to sleep. There seems to always be far too much to do and too little time, and so we take that time we need away from our sleep. Workaholics aren’t the only ones who sacrifice their sleep – college students and work at home parents are also known to stay up until the wee hours of the morning, getting maybe 4-5 hours of sleep each night. Our bodies don’t accept this, and not getting enough rest can spell disaster. It will sneak up on you but it will happen. You need to rest. This will recharge your system and the reboot will do the body good!

At least two major studies (using a million or so subjects) have shown that those who get less than 7 hours of sleep each night have a much higher mortality rate than those who sleep more. There are many reasons our bodies begin to break down without adequate rest. Without the ability to completely recharge after a full day of running all its processes, the systems get sluggish, organs perform less than optimally, and the body itself becomes stressed. No longer does it have the ability to recuperate, to heal, or be properly nourished. It shuts down from the inside out.

If you need help getting extra sleep, try avoiding caffeine 6-8 hours prior to bedtime, getting regular exercise (early in the day), and sleeping in a dark and quiet room. Some people may even need a midday nap to give their body the daily rest it needs for optimum wellness. Quiet activities such as reading a book or watching a television show in bed can also aid in relaxation, but be sure to avoid activities that are taxing on your thought processes – the most common cause of insomnia includes the inability to stop thinking or worrying about what life may bring.
You may also want to get into the habit of setting aside quiet time to let your mind recharge during the course of the day. If you’re like most people, you’ve probably got a lot of distractions and demands on your focus throughout the day, and staying constantly busy can be extremely draining. It will catch up to you.

If the thought of setting aside time to rest your mind seems like an unattainable luxury for you, you may be surprised to learn that it doesn’t have to take as long as you probably think. Try using the first 5 or 10 minutes of your lunch hour to step outside and clear your mind of scattered thoughts. Take a few deep breaths and maybe even walk a few paces to stretch your body at the same time.

As En Vogue once sang..."Free Your Mind" Do this again right before you go to bed in the evening, or after a particularly stressful situation. Trust me, I do know that sometimes that’s easier said than done, but you’ll notice a dramatic improvement in your level of concentration and focus if you do this regularly. Please don’t neglect your spiritual renewal either! You may not think your spirit is in need of rest and relaxation; after all, isn’t that part of us infinite and indestructible? Most people would say so, but they would also probably agree that it’s possible to dim or diminish our spiritual selves simply by neglecting them for extended periods of time. Take time each day to honor your spirit and connect with your inner essence. Take time for "YOU" and do something that is relaxing that will make you feel good about yourself. As for me, I turn to Yoga Booty Ballet Burlesque Cardio. Try it sometime...It is a great workout at a wonderful pace that will make you feel better with each day that you do it. It does the body good!

Lose 5 Pounds Super Easy...

How many times have you heard someone say that they want to lose five pounds? And how many times have you heard that the diet starts tomorrow? Isn't that an old cliche?

cli·ché/klēˈSHā/

Noun:
  1. A phrase or opinion that is overused and betrays a lack of original thought.
  2. A very predictable or unoriginal thing or person.
Tell me, and let's be honest here....
We talk the talk, but when we open that pantry door and see a bag of potato chips, out the window goes those thoughts of wanting to lose weight because we would much rather induldge in fat and grease. The truth at hand is,losing a mere five pounds is very realistic and it can be a great kick-start to your metabolism and energy levels. Plus, it can help you fit into that little black dress or suit for that upcoming wedding, reunion, or vacation. First though YOU have to make the commitment to start now, not tomorrow, not Monday, but right now!

Below is a healthy plan to help you shed 5 pounds quickly, easily and most importantly, the healthy way. As with all diets, check with your doctor before starting any weight loss or exercise plan. If I can do it, anyone can do it!

1. Begin by drinking more water. Lay off the soda/pop whatever you call it. I get caffeine headaches because i have been drinking it for wayyyyyy too long. Coca Cola has become my best friend over the years and is my wake up, and get up and go in the morning and through out the day. Nonetheless, I did realize that I was drinking far too much. Not wanting to get severe headaches I have no limited myself to 2 cans per day. If I space it out that is 4 small glasses with ice and that is plenty. I also realized how much water my body was lacking. This can be so very harmful. Organs will shut down if you don't get enough water. Some of you might not know that, but here is your wake up call. Your body requires water to function properly and with the right amount of water, your digestive system will work more efficiently. Plus, by filling your stomach with water, you'll eat less and feel full faster.
  • Water helps flush your body of toxins and water weight. Yes, more water actually helps your body get rid of excess water.
  • The daily minimum intake of water is 64 ounces (or almost 2 liters). If you're like most people, your current intake of water is probably less than half of the recommended amount, so drink up!
2. Get off that couch and get active! That's right, shake your groove thing girlie, even if it means dancing while running the vacuum. My kids used to laugh at me because I would turn on that song by the Village People..."YMCA" and dance around. Sure I looked like an idiot but who cares? I was burning calories! When you move your body you build muscle, which burns fat. There are so many activities that you can engage in that don't cost money or require expensive gym equipment to help you get fit and lose weight. Here are some ideas:
  • Walking around your neighborhood or in a local park
  • Biking
  • Hiking
  • Swimming
  • Throwing a ball with your kids or spouse
  • Frisbee
  • Volleyball
  • Tennis
  • Inline skating (with the proper safety equipment of course)
3. Start making healthier food choices! To effectively boost your calorie and fat burning processes, eat healthier foods like leafy green vegetables, fruits and lean meats.
  • You'll also want to limit your intake of red meat, high calorie and fat dressings, gravies and sauces and avoid sugary drinks, candy or other foods with lots of sugar.
  • Sugar causes you to put on weight, so when you eliminate sugar, you help eliminate weight gain. Also, try to choose natural or organic foods in order to avoid consuming chemicals that may actually cause you to retain weight.
4. Use portion control to limit the amount of food you consume. Do you know what this means? Studies show that reducing the amount of food you eat actually produces the quickest weight loss. Obviously you want to do this in a healthy manner, not obsessively or out of control. So many people think they need to cut off their food supply to lose weight which is actually more harmful than good. It messes with your metabolism and can actually cause you to put all that weight right back on and then some....so eat! Here is my suggestion:
  • Eating 6 small meals a day, as opposed to the three larger meals you're probably accustomed to, has been shown to be healthier, help reduce fat stores and to increase metabolism.
  • If you're wondering what a healthy portion looks like, it's all in the hands. In other words, a healthy portion or serving size is about the size of your fist, palm, or hand, depending on what food you're eating.
  • Close your fist. That's a healthy portion size for a serving of rice, pasta or other side dish.
  • Open your hand and look at the size of your palm. This is the perfect amount of chicken breast, pork or other types of meat. It should be about the size and thickness of a deck of cards.
  • The size of your entire open hand is the perfect size for veggies.
5. Replace unhealthy snacks with nuts, raw veggies or fruit!
My grandmother used to always say, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away!" Here are a few examples to help you choose healthier snack options:
  • When you're craving chips or other salty, crunchy snacks, grab a handful of nuts instead. They are healthier for you and satisfy the craving for salt or crunchiness. Also, try to buy nuts with less salt. Natural or raw varieties will help to reduce your salt intake too.
  • When you want something sweet, grab a piece of fruit like an apple, banana, orange, or melon. The natural sugar is way better for you than eating a bowl of ice cream or a handful (or two) of cookies.
  • Have the munchies in general? Nibble on some raw carrots, celery or broccoli.
Losing 5 pounds can be fun and make you feel so much better about yourself. The best part is that it can be done quickly, in as little time as a week or two, depending on your specific circumstances.Whether it's to kick-start your weight loss plan or to fit into that little black party dress, taking off 5 pounds is a step in the right direction to a healthier, more fit you. It begins now! So get off that couch and shake the pounds away! You'll feel so good and your body will thank you, after all, as I say so many times....your body is your house, your protective barrier, take care of it, no one else will. It's the only one you've got!

A friend of mine told me about a great book to pick up, it's called "Eat This Not That!" I've listed it below for you to check out. recently it was also hot topic on the TODAY show! Sure you can still eat other foods, just learn what foods are better than others as far as calories, sodium and fat. You'll be surprised what you learn from reading this book and you'll begin making changes that will shed the pounds while still eating what you love!
