Get Healthy...Build Your Body

Being healthy means watching what you eat and choosing the right foods. Getting in shape and trying to stay fit is not at all an easy task, and it can get expensive...but it doesn't have to! Like most routines, this article is not intended to be a “one size fits all.” Take from it what you will as non-professional advice from a woman who has always carried an extra 10 pounds on her at least. I kept telling people it was 'baby fat' until my daughter said to me one day; "Mom, I'm 21, it's not baby fat any longer!"

It was then that I realized I was hiding behind the childbirth of my two kids who were now college age and could no longer use the weight gain as an excuse. It wasn't until then that I decided it was time to get in shape and watch what I ate, but even then I was sloppy at it. Could it be more difficult? Oh you bet it could...then menopause set in..as if things weren't bad enough, now this? Hot flashes, weight gain again,..was this all necessary? I work hard to watch what goes into my mouth and I try to stay on a general exercise routine. Not everyone has the same body, and not everyone has good health, so please...seek the advice of your physician first and know that is most important is your health and well being. In that light, consider the following list that I found to be quite helpful:
  • Before beginning any serious weight lifting or body building regimen, consult your physician. Muscles are not built over night..it takes time and hard work to achieve a great body. What am I trying to say? You won't turn into Hercules over night!

  • Set your goals. What will make you happy? Define what you expect to achieve with your new bodybuilding campaign within a realistic time frame. If you create goals that are unattainable you are setting yourself up for failure. You can become bored, disappointed and disillusioned to the point where you may give up. This is a very sad outcome to what might have been the best decision of your life. Don’t sell yourself short. Set your long term goals, of course, but also set short term goals that are achievable. And, don’t forget to reward yourself when you do achieve them.

  • Consider the costs. If you don’t already have a budget, create one. Eating healthy is not cheap. If you live in good climates like I have in Houston TX, I had a garden from April through November. I had greens and such at hand all the time. If you don't have access to a garden 24/7, determine what amount of discretionary funds you have available for your bodybuilding program. This will determine whether you can afford to have a home gym or if your needs would better be served by joining a club. Joining a club is still a good short term introduction before spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on equipment that might not be appropriate for your needs.

  • Don’t forget some of the low cost alternatives to purchasing your bodybuilding equipment. If used equipment is still functional why spend the extra dollars just for a little glitz! Good, brand name used equipment is every bit as functional as something right off a showroom floor. If you can't afford the fancy schmancy gym equipment...get an exercise ball and a couple of 15 pound weights like I did. They work just as well and you work just as many muscles!

  • Consider combining a home gym along with a membership in a public facility. Purchase less expensive free weight equipment for use at home and join a gym to have access to the more expensive equipment. You can design your entire workout routines around a combination such as this. No money for a gym? Invest $9.99 in a DVD called Yoga Booty Ballet. I LOVE IT....and like milk, it does your body good!

  • Eat healthy! This can’t be stressed enough. The only true bodybuilding aids are good nutrition. Ok so I cheat sometimes...who doesn't? Just be careful, and try to stick to the proper nutrition schedule. I've found that when I tell myself I can't have something, I cheat and eat it 'because I can' ....my friends, we're only cheating on ourselves when we do this. Need help? Consult a licensed dietician. Watch your local community calendar for free seminars on diet and nutrition. Learn all you can about what nature freely provides that can help you to develop a healthy diet.

  • If you choose to use dietary supplements, make certain that you know what you are putting in your body. Follow the packaging guidelines I outlined previously. Ask your physician for his/her recommendations based on the regimen you have selected. No friend, coach or acquaintance can take the place of your physician and what works for one person may not at all work for someone else. In fact, you may even investigate finding a physician who specializes in sports wellness.

  • Be kind to yourself. Yes, it’s important to push to achieve your goals, but it’s very easy to tip the scales in the other direction and create a nightmare for yourself. Obsessive, compulsive behaviors are not conducive to a healthy bodybuilding lifestyle. Someone once told me that your body is your house, and my friend...it's the only one you'll ever have, so please, take care of it! Be happy being YOU and be proud of what you have accomplished! Benefits Of The Raw Food Diet...Is Raw Food a Cancer Treatment?

Raw food cancer treatments are becoming popular with some people, although they are generally not supported by the mainstream medical world. Some people are taking up a raw food diet in the hope that this will help their body overcome cancer or recover from the effects of surgery and medications.Enjoying a natural whole food diet is easier than you think, and it’s not an all or nothing proposition; adding any amount of uncooked food to your diet will be beneficial. If you’re eating a diet consisting of 50% raw food, you can receive very noticeable benefits, and a diet consisting of 75% to 100% raw foods will give you amazing results.

Ultimately, the choices we make in our lives today have a profound impact on our health tomorrow. When we understand and take advantage of the natural healthy choices that are available to us, life becomes much easier and we begin to come alive again.  With age old wisdom and years of practical application, we blend natural raw food nutrition with other life giving principles to create a level of vitality and composure that are necessary to operate effectively in today’s world.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that some people have found raw food helpful in their battles against cancer. These are usually just individual reported cases.

For most people on a standard American or other western diet, switching to raw food may be very beneficial simply because you will be cutting out most of the processed and refined foods loaded with fats and sugar that place such a burden on our digestive systems and add to our weight. A raw food diet is usually vegetarian and often vegan, although some people use unpasteurized milk and cheese if available. Indeed there are some people who eat raw meat but if you wish to do this you should avoid pork and poultry and try to find grass reared organic beef so that you are not taking in large quantities of the hormones that are fed to most farmed cattle. Be aware that raw animal products can carry bacteria and are never recommended for pregnant women.

The raw vegan diet is the type that is most often followed by cancer patients. This involves eating only unprocessed and uncooked fruits, vegetables, seeds etc. No animal products are consumed at all. You can use cold pressed oils but most other foods that come in a package will be heat treated in some way. Note that the vegan diet does not contain vitamin B12 and you may need to supplement this, although most people have enough stored to see them through for several years. If you feel that adopting the raw food cancer diet 100% of the time is simply too much, try replacing one or two meals a day with raw.

A raw food diet means consuming food in its natural, unprocessed form. There are several common-sense rationales for why this is a good idea. Processing and cooking food can take so much of the basic nutritional value away. Think of some of the conventional wisdom you’ve heard about for years, such as: If you cook pasta just to the al dente (or medium) stage, it will have more calories, yes, but it will have more the nutritional value in it than if you cooked it to a well-done stage. Or you probably remember hearing not to peel carrots or potatoes too deeply, because most of the nutrients and values are just under the surface.

The raw food diet means eating unprocessed, uncooked, organic, whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, dried fruits, seaweeds, etc. It means a diet that is at least 75% uncooked! Cooking takes out flavor and nutrition from vegetables and fruits. A raw food diet means eating more the way our ancient ancestors did. Our healthier, more fit ancestors. They cooked very little, and certainly didn’t cook or process fruits and vegetables. They ate them RAW. Their water wasn’t from a tap; it was natural, spring water. Maybe they drank some coconut milk on occasion.

Raw food is generally much higher in antioxidants than cooked, and is believed by its advocates to be accepted by the body in a much more simple way. Raw food supporters claim that eating cooked food sets off an antibody response in the body which causes more stress to the digestive system. Therefore, they argue that following a raw food diet will free up a lot of the body's energy for dealing with the physical challenges of cancer. In some cases people have reported reduction of tumor sizes. In other cases, improving your nutrition may help your body handle the medications that you are probably taking to fight the cancer.

Most people have difficulty following a 100% raw food diet for a very long period. However, if you are suffering from cancer you might want to try it for a few months or even a year. This type of diet has also been said to control migraine headaches in children and adults. Alternatively, try increasing your consumption of raw foods or limiting cooked foods to one meal a day. When you do eat cooked foods, try to avoid sugar, white flour products and other highly refined or processed foods. Go for as natural as possible.

Of course you should always consult with your medical advisor before taking up any special diet, especially if you are suffering from cancer or other medical conditions. If your current doctor is very unsympathetic you could try seeking out one who is more attuned to natural health treatments. Do not try to apply raw food cancer treatment alone, but follow your doctor's advice. Hey stay healthy, your body is your house...and it's the only one you'll ever have, so take care of it! Doesn’t it just make sense that this is how our bodies were meant to eat? It’s a way of eating that’s in harmony with the planet and in harmony with our own metabolisms. Our bodies were meant to work, and need to work to be efficient. That means exercise, certainly, but it also means eating natural, raw foods that require more energy to digest them.
