How Women Should Dress for Business

Day in and day out women are faced with the same question? "What do I wear?" Whether you need an outfit for work tomorrow, or something that will land you a potential new job, make sure that it looks classy. Please do not misconstrue what I say from what I mean. Many women think classy comes with a big price tag. SO NOT TRUE! The difference between classy and trashy is like going from zero to 180 in a race car. Ladies, how many times have you looked in your closet for the right business attire and not found what you were searching for? My guess is that  you do it often… Not to worry, we are all creatures of habit and I do the same. Whether I am dressing to go out to dinner or to a job interview I must try on 10 different outfits. We ponder "what do I wear?" in our minds at least 100 times. Often, the stress of our 'dress' attire keeps us awake at night tossing and turning. Don't stress out…many will tell you (including myself) to try planning ahead? OK, that's all fine and dandy, but what if your closet doesn't have that much to offer and you are stuck between a rock and a hard place?

Listen my fellow women friends, opportunity only knocks one time for some people, so you have to be ready, or the chance very well might pass you by. Remember, your credibility literally hinges on how you are perceived at first glance. What if the the COO of a company chose someone else over you because of your professional business attire that you came to your job interview in? Does it happen? You bet it does. This is a gray area. Gone are the days in today's society where a job is given to the one most qualified. Again, don't mistake what I am saying here… What I mean is that times are different and the market is super competitive so you have to be sharp and quick on your feet. Not only does a new job require brains but it also displays some character shown through beauty, and I am not at all referencing this to as in 'your looks.' You can never go wrong with a professional look. You want to look classy and extraordinary, not like you're about to walk into the club on a Friday night with the gals.

If your closet leaves much to be desired, make some changes. Too many women that I talk to say "I don't have the money" yet you see them week after week at the local pub or club drinking cosmo's and martini's like there's no tomorrow. Here's my 2 cents…if you have $20 to piss away on liquor, you should start saving some of that cash and using it towards a new wardrobe. Trust me, your closet won't fill up over night, BUT after a few months it will begin to look a whole lot better. The name of the game here is not how much it cost, rather how good it looks!

Women think that you have to spend a lot or go to the high end stores and boutiques to get noticed. WRONG! Try Marshall's or TJ Maxx or Burlington Coat Factory. These are stores that sell discounted merchandise. If you still desire the brand names look in the clearance sections.Heck go to K-Mart or Target. I find a ton of clothes there for great prices.Maybe this week you only found a blouse. No problem…be on the look out in the days/weeks to come for a pair of slacks, or a skirt to go with it. What you want to do is build up a variety of style, colors and even prints (but nothing super drastic) that you can mix and match. No we aren't 5 years old any more but sometime we need a little help. If I could put those "garanimal tags" on everything like they do for our kiddos, we'd all be walking around making a fashion statement.

First things first; choose the right colors. Not sure what they are? Go to any cosmetic counter in a shopping mall and ask them to help you determine your skin tone and suitable colors that will accentuate your skin tones. What I am getting at here is that you don't need to spend a lot to look like a million buckaroos. My daughter taught me a saying once years ago, and it has always stuck in my head; "Dress for the job you want, not for the job you have!" What does this mean? Don't even be afraid to go the extra mile to get what you want. Don't even be afraid to step outside of the box.
With that being said; I cannot stress this statement enough ladies…. First impressions are everything!!!!!

So now you must be asking yourself... "How do I figure out how to dress and what to wear?" A good place to start is always at the bottom (your feet) while working your way up. So with that being said one of the most important parts of any outfit is a good pair of shoes (and this doesn’t change all because you expect to find yourself behind a desk for a good portion of the day). It's out of habit but people are going to look. Not everyone can wear heels. No problem…you can find classy shoes without the 5 inch heels. Not every woman can walk in heels due to the support mainly. It's better to wear something you feel good in, that way no accidents. No one wants to make a first impression by falling flat on their face because they can't walk in stilettos that her best friend picked out for her.

Heels don't work for everyone. I've made this statement time and time again; ladies a nice, simple, flat pair of shoes are fine. No one wants to feel too cramped in their professional confines. As your feet become used to standing for periods of time, perhaps then you might increase the heels size. Next tip is; Never wear shoes with flashy colors to the office, unless your office is for a designer or you work in retail. If this is the case, style is everything and the more colors sometimes the crazier fashion statement you make. At a regular 9-5 job however, when buying shoes for work, your best bet is to go with something basic. Tan, taupe, grey, brown, and my favorite; black.

Are you ready to hit the ground running and go window shopping for some new ideas? Might I make a few suggestions if I may? Things to look out for while shopping for blouses: as with your slacks, be careful to notice how tight your top is – if you can see the outline of your bra with it on, it’s probably too tight. The statement 'how low can you go' was not intended for office chit-chat so if your top is so low cut that you’re worried someone might be able to tell the color of your bra or worse, see your hooters if you move in a particular way, it’s probably cut way too low; sleeveless tops may or may not be acceptable in your office, double check before you show up to work in one; colored blouses are easier to clean than white. Once you get better used to life in the business world, you may end up expanding your choices to include suits and skirts and pantyhose. Watch how of how you bend over because trust me when I say....all eyes are on you!

Getting noticed is what we all want, so remain classy and fashionable but do it the right way for heaven sakes. No you do not have to be the power dresser, nor do you want to be that coworker that everyone is talking about at happy hour night after night. The whole thought process here is to give your wardrobe a face lift by making simple changes. Don't have enough cash to buy suits, blouses, skirts and slacks right away? Well then, accessorize sister! (again, nothing flashy!) Add a soft necklace or a nice pair of earrings, or a watch to something simple that you already have. You don't want to walk into the office looking like Mr. T with chains hanging, banging, and clanging down your chest. My grandmother always used to say "less is more!" Please, if you didn't get anything else out of this article, remember that one. My nonprofessional advice; just look polished, smile and be outgoing. That my friend supersedes everything else.
