The History of the Sexy Chemise and WHY Women Wear It?

What is a chemise and why do women wear it? Is the chemise meant to be worn as pajamas, or sexy lingerie? Women wear the chemise for a variety of looks. They wear it with a variety of clothes, or they simply just wear it as a sexy  lingerie. A definition of the chemise would typically have been a dress hanging straight from the shoulders and giving the figure a uniform shape, popular in the 1920s-1950s, nonetheless it's 2014 today and times although they have changed, the chemise is still a very popular choice of intimate apparel from a woman's perspective. We've gotten a little bit bolder wearing intimate apparel and designers have created simple to erotic, racy and risqué however the name still means the same thing. 

The chemise is made of an array of fabrics today. Our standards would be cotton, and satin which are the most popular. Satin and silk is what is sold in the form of women's intimate apparel.

The chemise may be sold in lingerie sets with a robe and is usually made in either silk or satin materials with a lace trim of some sort. Many are truly meant to be deliberately provocative indeed , which was not what the original intent of the chemise was.

Some people have asked "Is the chemise an article of clothing that can be layered amongst other clothes or is this piece strictly for bedroom purposes?" The truth at hand is this; the chemise is actually meant for the bedroom, yes. You shouldn't wear this as a piece under a shirt or blouse instead of wear a bra, please no. 



                3)   You see, to define the chemise is not particularly easy as one might think…there are many forms of it that are still around today and although the 1920s, 30s, 40s, & 50s denoted it as another form of apparel to wear in numerous ways, the Irish created the original for of the chemise. Back in the day it was created to keep sweat and body oils from staining or spreading to the outer garments. Let's go back even further….truthfully it became really popular in the European Middle Ages. Women wore these under their gowns or robes depending on their social status. Did men ever wear these? Yes, with their trousers…a long time ago, not today
