Being a Single Mom...It's Not Easy

Being a single mom is not at all easy, and anyone who tells you it is quite frankly is living in some sort of la-la-land! If anyone would have told me when I was younger that I would end up taking on the role of single parenting half way through my life I would have thought that they were crazy. My true intentions were to be a loving wife and mother and a stay at home mom at best. Sometimes life throws us a curve ball and it doesn't go the way we had intended it to.

So what does one do besides cry and feel as if her world was turned upside down? You suck it up sister and you go full throttle pushing forward. You find what makes you a better person and you get skilled, you take classes and then you show determination while seeking out what would work best for you and your child(children). This is a whole new way of life, so buckle up and be prepared for a bumpy ride, because as much as I would love to tell you otherwise and inform you that life is a bowl of cherries and everything is going to be peachy, truth be told, it is hard core being a single mom, so please....let's not sugar coat it.

Being a single mother is not something that one learns. It is something like that of a technique that one must develop. We make mistakes, we get upset. We are the one that our children blame for all of the wrong doings and praise when we do good deeds pertaining to them. This role is not one that you can study up on. It is not something that you enter into lightly. It's a lot of hard work. There were days that I laughed so hard I cried, and then there were days when my children made me cry so hard that I had to laugh, for if I did not, I would have caved in and crumbled. As a single mom, we need to be the calm, cool, and collective one. We have to lead the way. We are the one that has to take ownership of all our the responsibilities. Whether what we do is right or wrong, we are scrutinized by our children.

Being a single mom by choice can have its advantages. There are many women out there who have decided to raise kids on their own. It is not always the easiest thing to do, but it can be a very rewarding experience for the mother. First, living independently can build loads of confidence in a woman. Being able to support her own family and run her own household is a really great experience. Not only does she get to make her own rules and do things her own way, but she also gets to raise her kids the way she wants to without any disagreements from a spouse. If this is the single parenting via a divorce, yes, you still have to deal with the ex-spouse, BUT you take on a new direction, a new way of life, and a new beginning for yourself and your kiddo(s).

There are many so very things that a woman has to consider when being a single mom by choice. The key is to gather your thoughts, and get a grasp on what you about to enter into. What does this mean? Use your nugget and think! She has to realize the importance of keeping a budget. When there is only one income coming into a household, keeping and sticking to a budget is vital. The single mom needs to be sure that she can keep a roof over her child's head, the lights on and a warm shelter when it is cold. She needs to be able to feed and provide for her children, so her freedom of spending money is very limited. If she is used to a lavish life style like so many women are, you'd better think about this one and restructure your budget. If you are aware of this it won't be bad at all. If you go into this nonetheless thinking it is going to be a walk in the park, oh Mary Poppins have you been drinking way too much of that supercalifragilisticexpialidocious stuff. It is not an easy task, but you can do it! You may need to restructure your entire life/life style, however it is within reason.

Being a single mom allows you to have extra bonding time with your kids. Although, a two parent home is ideal, single moms can focus all of their attention on their children without having to share their time. Also, there is less arguing in the household for children to witness like a home with two parents. There is no chance of undermining when it comes to discipline and expecting respect from her children, because she is the only parent and therefore what she says, goes.

It can be a wonderful experience being a single mom, however, there needs to be other things added to her life as well that children just can't provide. This is where setting equal time between her children and herself is important. It can get very tiring when a mom does it all by herself, therefore taking some time out for herself is exactly what she needs to boost herself back up again to be the proud single parent that she is.

Are you entitled to get involved again in another relationships?  Sure you are, but pay close attention; The complexities of getting into a relationship with someone other than your child's father are the subject of a whole different blog post. Maybe even a book. To sum things up, there is the question of when and how to explain the relationship to your child; how much time your new boyfriend should spend around your child; balancing time with your boyfriend along with time with your child. It's a never-ending juggling act and it is not easy.Notice I didn’t say being a single parent is easy. Even in a two parent household parenting is still difficult. I said it wasn’t so bad. And it isn’t. But just because something is difficult doesn’t mean it can’t be done or shouldn’t be done at all. If that were case no one would do anything ever.

What do I like best about the role? Many things, but this is what I like best of all;

There is NO ONE to undermine my authority. When I say the word, it's the word. When I call out, "Bedtime," there was no one to say, "Hey, let them stay up another half hour." When I said "you're grounded" I meant exactly that...(those words; 'you're grounded'... I really never did use because my kids and I had that type of relationship where as they knew that I meant business and that their ass was grass if they lied, or did what they weren't supposed to do.) There is a line that you must draw between being the friend and the mother, and in the end, the mother card is so much more powerful. Your child(children) don't need another friend, they have plenty. They need a stern mother who is going to be the backbone and the leader. It's a big responsibility to make all the choices yourself, but decision making is a big responsibility whether you're married or single.

When you're single, you understand how enormous your charge is and you take it more seriously because you know there isn't anyone else around to defer to. My non-professional advice? Pay attention to your children. Give them love, and lots of it. Your needs are now on the back burner, so get used to being the giver and no longer the taker. You'll go without, you'll feed them first, and you'll work countless jobs to give them the lifestyle that they so deserve because you want them to realize some day not what you did for them, rather how much they meant to you to have changed your entire way of life. Some day, when you least expect it, they will give back. Don't believe me? Ask my children, my son and my daughter. They took me to Hawaii for a week in April 2012 to show me their love and appreciation. For all the nights as a single, divorced mom that I laid awake crying wondering if I made the right choice I say to you now; Hell Yes I did!My kids are my rock and I would not be the woman I am today without the two of them.

Relationships: Why Men Choose to Lie to Women

From the time I was a young girl, I was raised to tell the truth, to be open, honest and I learned that communication was key. I watched my parents live a lifetime of love and open communication. I learn from the best. In essence, this certainly prepared me for my more mature days nonetheless, there were many things that I did not learn, that I was very naive of and that I still to this day DO NOT understand. This article is about the role a man plays when he enters into a relationship knowing that he is keeping the truth from his partner. Why do men choose to lie? When I say partner, I do not mean a long time lover, girlfriend, etc. This man could be a guy you have only dated once or twice. he is the man who has every option to be up front,...to lay his cards on the table and the one who holds the cards to a certain degree...so WHY then, can he not just tell the truth? Are they afraid of commitment, or getting caught if they are in a relationship with someone else, or married, which is even worse? This is about why men lie, or bend the truth. John Le Carre once said; "Betrayal can only happen if you love." I totally disagree.

From the time a man opens his yap even if it is on a first text, phone call, or date; if he hides the truth, (if he is in a relationship already or has a wife) he is being dishonest from the get-go. Here's my thoughts; why not just be honest and allow the woman to make a decision based on his honest statement? Because that is far too easy, and he doesn't want to risk getting caught. Guess what fellas? Women are not as stupid as you think. I did not believe in ever prying into a mans life, nor did I feel that I should have to do research on him prior to a date, that was then, this is now.

You don't buy a house or a car without doing research on the product, so why in the hell would you jump into a solid relationship or date a man more than once if you didn't take the test drive first to find out if the goods are really priceless? Do you have doubts? Are things not adding up? Does he like to text and rarely talk? Are your meetings at his convenience and not yours? Does he leave you hanging and just disappear while in a conversation via text, phone, chat or email? Is he lying to you? Are you feeling uneasy? Do you need answers? I have several ways to dig for the truth, but lets start with something easy shall we? In today's society, the internet is your best friend, so learn how to use your resources! Try this; Google his name. See what comes up? Paper trails are easy to follow when people are messy and stupid. If you wish to get more in depth; use this source. 1) Enter His Email Address 2) See Hidden Pics & Social Profiles Now! Spokeo.com/Find-Cheaters

Who is this man and what kind of guy does this? He is probably the man that no one would ever expect to do such a thing. He is that one man who is probably the perfect son, brother, boyfriend, husband or partner. He is the man who sweeps in and gets under your skin and before you know it you are an emotional basket case of feelings...What you didn't know what that In some form or another, and through concealment and or much fabrication, he was or is deceptive to you.

Let's face it, deception plays a role in all of our relationships. Most people, however, do not like to acknowledge this, especially when it comes to love and romance. Every now and then, people discover something about a romantic partner which makes the issue of lying impossible to ignore. Making such a discovery can be unsettling because it violates our basic notions about intimacy and trust. It is not fun to think about the lies people tell to those they love. Nonetheless, at the same time, people tend to be curious about the topics which couples try to hide and conceal from each other.

Relational Issues
  • Time Together - people lie about the reasons why they can't spend time together or see each other ("I am so busy, I have so much work to do, I don't have time right now")....
  • Past Relationships - partners lie about their past level of involvement ("I never really loved her," "I am much closer to you," "I love you so much more than anyone else")...
  • Feelings, Interest, Crushes, and Attraction to Others - people lie about their feelings and interest in others - often includes ex-partners, friends, someone at work...
  • Secret Contact - lovers lie about their friendships, time spent with others, accidental encounters (running into ex), phone calls, e-mails, and text messages with others. Essentially people lie about intimate, but non-sexual contact with someone else...
  • Level of Commitment – people lie about their feelings for partner, uncertainty or doubts about the relationship - not sure really love or want to marry partner or stay together...
  • Flirting with Others - people lie about flirting with others...
  • Betraying Confidences - lovers lie to each other about keeping secrets confidential...
  • Hide Time with Others - people hide activities and time spent with others - usually friends or coworkers...

Sexual Issues
  • Sexual Fantasies – lovers conceal having sexual fantasies about others during sex. Or thinking about sex with someone else - usually the fantasy involves a partner's friend, family member, or a co-worker...
  • Sexual History - lovers lie about the number of past partners, unsafe sex practices, what they have and have not done with others, their virginity, having an abortion, childhood abuse...
  • Infidelity and Cheating - spouses lie about having sex with other people... sometimes it involves issues of paternity...
  • Sexual Orientation - some people lie about same sex contact or interest...

Negative Thoughts
  • Negative Feelings towards Partner’s Family/friends - people lie about liking other people who are important to a partner...
  • Negative Feelings about Partner’s Physical Appearance - lovers lie about liking their partner's appearance, hair, weight, age, clothes...
  • Negative Feelings about Partner’s Career - people lie about liking or respecting their partner's job, school, career choices...
  • Negative Feelings about Partner’s Behavior/character - lovers lie about liking their partner's kids, habits, personality, sense of humor...
Negative Behaviors
  • Drug Use - lovers lie about past or current drug use...
  • Alcohol Consumption - partners lie about alcohol consumption...
  • Smoking - people lie about smoking...
  • Gambling - lovers lie about gambling...
Differences
  • Hide Important Beliefs - lovers lie about true feelings on issues (i.e., politics, religion, pets) in order to get along with partner...
  • Enjoyment of Activities - people lie about enjoying things a partner likes to do...
Financial Issues
  • Resources - people lie about their income, resources, inheritance...
  • Debt - lovers lie about their level of debit...
  • Spending Habits - people lie about how they spend money...
Insecurities
  • Physical Appearance/health - people lie about age, weight, health...
  • Jealously - lovers lie about being jealous and snooping...
  • Career Performance - partners lie about how well work, school, career is going...
  • Family and Friends - lovers lie to make family and friends seem better...
  • Love and Emotions - people lie to their partners about feeling vulnerable, scared, and being overly emotional...
My grandmother once told me that the truth shall set you free. So why then is it so damn difficult for a man to just tell the truth? Fiction is far more believable. Well, we woman do have a tendency to refuse to believe something that is just too "easy" to be true. Poor men, where do they go at such a time. If they say the truth, they will be constantly questioned. So, they make up a more complex lie, and the women tend to fall for it! I believe that many men exaggerate about themselves in order to put up a proud front before women. They feel that if a woman discovers a "truth", about them, they might lose a woman's attention. Men might continue to do so, until one fine day, when their lies are chanced upon.

Often a man is not exactly lying, but he is not completely honest either. He will say the acceptable part of the truth and very conveniently "forget" about the unacceptable part of it; like he may say that he took a friend out for shopping, but he may just omit the part where his "friend" is actually his ex-girlfriend. Let's face it; if you are his girlfriend or wife, you would at least frown at the concept. So, to keep you happy, he would simply not mention it. My non-professional advice? Women are blessed with intuition and a whole load of intellect. I say, use what your "momma gave ya"and follow your gut. If you think he may be lying or that something just does not seem right, it's probably true. You need to decide how to proceed. Just remember, if he is lying, he is good at it. Often they tell one lie to cover up another. I wonder sometimes how they keep it all straight? Why is it so difficult to be honest?

What Is Team Work in Business?

Running a business is great, but let me tell you something,..it certainly is not as easy as it looks, not by a long shot. I've been on both sides of the fence. I've worked for employers and I am an employer. Day to day tasks only run smoothly when you have a staff that gets along and works together well. People wonder, what does it take to run a successful business? The answer is team work, and that means having exceptional team players. Finding the right group of people that work together well and are in sync together is not an easy task and often it may take making a few mistakes in hiring skills to determine what you know works and what you know needs to be changed. The good news is that there is room for failure, and mistakes which lead to changes and positive growth.

I learned at a very young age that respect is everything. You first must respect yourself if you wish for others to respect you. This is crucial. Confidence is the next thing that you need. In business, to be in management or to be the owner of a small business one must hold them self accountable for their actions.

The dictionary defines teamwork as the actions of individuals, brought together for a common purpose or goal, which subordinate the needs of the individual to the needs of the group. In essence, each person on the team puts aside his or her individual needs to work towards the larger group objective. The interactions among the members and the work they complete is called teamwork. I've found that team-building exercises can be a powerful way to unite a group, develop strengths, and address weaknesses – but only if the exercises are planned and carried out strategically. In other words, there has to be a real purpose behind your decision to do the exercise in order for it to work.

Sooo, what's number one on the list? Being a team player. That's it in a nutshell. You really need to enter into a new job wanting to succeed and do well, but more so to be a team player. Being part of a team has taken on a higher priority since many companies are still operating with leaner work forces and there is a greater need to accomplish goals through others. Developing leadership and developing teamwork together need a lot of work. Leaders aren’t always great team players and vice verse. Leading often requires being willing to stand out alone and disagree with others. It means taking the chance of some people not always being happy with how you decide to proceed. Teamwork doesn’t come easily to everyone. But it is teachable and learnable.

Every employer is looking for a specific set of skills from job-seekers that match the skills necessary to perform a particular job. When we work together as groups, most often it means that we all have common goals...this means teamwork is essential to succeed! Skills are something that can be taught. Personality on the other hand...not so much. What am I trying to say here? Find employees that have spunk, and aren't afraid to to take on new tasks, or to take risks. Make sure that you get a good vibe from them at your first meeting. If your gut tells you they aren't a good fit, listen to your gut. Every day I work and give 110% whether it be at my part time job or running my businesses. That's what you have to do. When you walk through the doors to your place of employment- leave your personal life and problems at home. No one wants to hear them and it is a major distraction. It also puts pressures on your ability to do a good job. If you display actions and don't seem all that enthused, or if you slack, are lazy or simply don't care, your coworkers may just pick up your bad habits, and that can lead to a big problem.

Teachers expect teamwork among students and provide them with group projects so that they can learn teamwork skills. Employers expect individuals to function effectively on various teams and most organizations convene teams to tackle problems or projects. Therefore, it’s important to learn teamwork skills, even if you prefer to work independently.

When everyone puts their skills together and they begin to preform as a true team, great things begin to happen.

What does teamwork look like in action? First, group members focus on the goal. People put aside personal likes and dislikes and petty grievances to get the job done. Team members show passion for the project and each contributes to its success. Be the best that you can be! How does one achieve this?

Skills necessary for good teamwork include:
  • Respect for individual contributions
  • Putting aside individual glory
  • Consensus building
  • Clear communication
  • Persuasive speech
  • Compromise

So, what happens if teamwork isn’t your strength? That's a real no brainer...the company falls apart. Customers notice these things and they won't come back if the service and especially the 'customer service' is NOT up to par. Innovation, Success, Evaluation, Development, Growth, Solution, Progress and Marketing all combined equal team work.

Jumping Back Into the Dating Pool at 50

If you are 50 or older and just jumping back into the dating pool I say kudos to you! Congratulations for taking the leap! Yes, we know while dating in your 20s or even 30s may have been difficult, it's a vastly different landscape now. Times are changing and we need to keep up with the trends of the dating world. You've entered a new chapter of your life, so enjoy yourself. W e really do mean that in a GREAT way. Think about it: You bring so much more to the table now as a mature adult, and trust me, that is pretty significant. You've learned from past experiences and  mistakes. The fact of the matter is now, you've got wisdom, experience under your belt, and street smarts to help you identify exactly what you're looking for in a relationship. With those thoughts in mind, here are just a few simple tips for creating a profile which will help ensure your online dating success:

First, sit down and make some notes about what it is that you seek, and desire most? Be prepared  (I guess is what I am trying to say) What does that mean? Make a List of the pro's and con's. Your expectations of what you desire in a relationship and a future mate should be accurately reflected in your online profile. Write down what type of person you are looking for, your expectation (i.e., companionship or marriage), your values and personal interests.

Dating can be an unnerving experience at any age. Nonetheless, dating after age 50+ presents a unique set of challenges. You have a 50-year-old body with a 30-year-old headset, and you need to figure out what to do to get back in the groove! Did you know that Americans age 50 and older are the fastest growing demographic on the dating website? Does that surprise you? It shouldn't! The bottom line is simple; We don't have the time or patience to go bar or club hopping. We want someone real that is not going to be the player or play us. At this age you are past the 'playing games' era.

Here's my suggestion, totally unprofessionally, but nevertheless, my honest opinion; Seek out the help from a good friend. Post a flattering picture of yourself online, but don't use a photo 10 years younger than you are. Get your friend to look at the picture before you put it online and find the best picture that really represents who you are...you don't want to be deceiving in any way. You should also avoid exaggerating or downright lying in your profile. My theory is this; the more descriptive and honest that you are, the better match you are actually going to make. People would rather have honesty even if it means you aren't the perfect fit of what they desire verse handing them a line of shit a mile long that you'think' they want to hear.

 Whatever you do, please don't turn a first date into a job interview. Let loose, and have some fun for heaven sake! Go into the meeting with the intention of having a good time. Let go of the goal-oriented dating of finding a soul mate, and just RELAX! You want to lower your expectation of finding someone to spend the rest of your life with. Find someone to date that seems intriguing to you. Be open to experiencing each date and each person for what they have to offer. Prepare conversation starters. (think of what you want to ask in advance so that your words don't get all fumbled and you end up putting your foot in your mouth.) There's nothing worse than awkward pauses on a first date that stretch into eternity. Let's eliminate that one by coming up with a few questions that will break the ice;

You need to have a list of a few conversation starters such as what's your favorite dish, do you like to travel, what sporting events do you follow, and do ask about their family.Start off simple, this is your first meeting and your opportunity to make a great first impression. You don't want to sound nosey. Never ask if they own their home, how much they make, what their 401K looks like in terms of retirement, or what they drive. That is tacky and materialistic and if you want to make a person run like the wind, that'll do it. These things you'll learn  in time if you see them again AND if they desire to continue seeing you. Relationships start as friendships and it is upon this that you build your solid foundation. Remember, communication is always KEY!

A few key notes; No matter how old you are when you jump into the world of dating, keep your integrity in mind. You really don’t have to play by anyone else’s rules. If you respect yourself, you inadvertently demand that the world around you do the same. Just keep in mind that things have changed and there may be some unexpected twists and turns for you to navigate. Be sure to realize it’s alright to be alone. If you’ve spent your life with someone taking care of you or were expected to wait on someone hand and foot, dating might take you by surprise. Know that going on a date with someone doesn’t obligate you to be in a relationship with a person. It just means you had a nice evening together. Just enjoy yourself and have a good time. It's OK to get your feet wet!

Biceps, 6 Packs and Tight Tushes...What Women Love in a Well Built Man

When we ask women what the love about men and their bodies we get a variety of responses. Strong shoulders literally sweep women off their feet but oh there are so many other traits in a well sculpted man that women adore...Sure, women love a guy with a chiseled six-pack, who wouldn't? ...But that's not the only body part they check out at the beach (or in bed). Do you often wonder why more men are heading to the gym and why they start sculpting?

Women love a tone man, and they see strong forearms and think you can do everything: playing sports, fending off a mugger, building a project, serving as a big bad ass body guard, and maintain a dexterous touch long enough to leave them extremely satisfied. So fellas, roll up those sleeves, and let 'em have a look. Oh, and it's not just the arms and biceps that we're noticing....Women check out your butt because it's a clue to your worthiness as a physical specimen. If you're in great shape, it carries high. Otherwise, your rear end droops like a sack of old potatoes, and that's so not cool. You wouldn't want to see women with a fat, or saggy tush, right? What about the chest? Yes, women treasure your chest as much as you do their own. Touching, kissing, and licking a man's chest is undoubtedly a super turn-on for most women, at least most of the women that I know.

It's not just one particular thing that catches a woman's eye, nonetheless, the arms and biceps do stand out when you are wearing a nice fitting shirt. For instance, my friend 'Pittsburgh' looks nice in a well defined shirt. So guys, are you...armed and dangerous? Are your biceps big, your abs tight and your ass...well, you get the picture? The most noticeable on a man from the observation deck are the biceps because this is what we see visibly. The abs and tush, now that is a different story and one to be seen in the bedroom or behind closed doors for a private showing. Let's talk then for a minute about the biceps? How do we catch a glimpse of these? Simple ways actually...Opening  jars; hanging onto a rugby ball; wrestling somebody into a headlock; carrying a keg of beer, arm-wrestling or a simple swim where they use all of their muscles. These are just a few of the actions that call your biceps to arms, and we're sure you'll agree that they are all awesomely masculine. It's one of the simplest equations in male mental arithmetic: big arms equals a strong man, and yes we ladies love a strong man.

  1. Whey Protein - This is a very common way that athletes and body builders use to bulk up and very good for you! There are many different types of whey protein available on the market that can be found at your local supplement store or even local retail stores.  When following a proper diet and not abusing the product, people can put on the muscle that they desire.
  2. Other Protein Powders - Besides whey protein, people looking to bulk up can choose from soy protein, whey protein isolate, or egg protein.  These protein powders are also available at your local supplement store and online, just research them to find the best prices and locations that work for you.
  3. Consume Foods That are High in Protein - If you want to bulk up but don't want to go the route of powders, then you can bulk up by consuming foods that are high in protein.  These foods would be beef, eggs, and other animal products.  It is important to find lean sources so that you are not eating too much fat and unhealthy calories.
  4. Liquid Protein Shots - This option is similar to protein powders; however, liquid protein shots do not need to be prepared and are easy to transport and consume on the go.  These shots have 25 grams of quality protein and can be consumed up to three times a day. 5. Work out and lift weights - Lifting weights and consuming extra protein will help your muscles add mass.  Strength training is an extremely important factor for bulking up and should be done at least 3 times per week. If you don't work out, the extra protein you are consuming will have little to no effect.
Muscles aren't going to appear on men over night any more than our asses are going to get flatter...so, my unprofessional advice? Red or White... Know How to Choose the Right Wine

There is a lot to know about wine, so we certainly do not expect you to become a connoisseur over night, nonetheless, there are ways to learn which is which and just what wine we should drink with certain foods. Here's a tip for you; remember to note the characteristics of the wine on all sensory areas of the tongue. Sweetness is detected on the very tip of the tongue, while bitter tastes are sensed in the extreme rear. Saltiness is sensed on the front, upper sides of the tongue, and the acidity-sour taste is sensed mainly on the sides. Do you know how to choose the right type of wine according to the foods you eat?

Some suggest focusing your attention on one sensation at a time in order to be more efficient in your taste. Try taking a sip of wine and swallowing immediately. Then try another sip, this time letting the wine work well around the palate into these sensory areas before swallowing. You will recognize a noticeable difference in the intensity of flavors! The main rule to remember about pairing wine with food is that there are no rules: you should drink the wines you like with the foods you like. That being said, there are some basic guidelines that can help you maximize your enjoyment of wine-food pairing.

Do keep in mind that the right wine can enhance a dish to perfection. While there are no hard and fast rules on matching food and wine because it's ultimately a matter of personal taste, there are basic guidelines on what wine connoisseurs and food lovers consider make good choices. In this article, you'll learn about how to make wine choices that will complement the flavors of a meal. Check out these tips;
  • A basic guideline is to 'Match' and 'Complement' the characteristics of food to the wine, or 'Contrast' or counterbalance overpowering characteristics. For example: Spicy foods with sweeter wine.
  • Be aware that some wines can be spoiled by the introduction of certain food flavors, just as they can be enhanced. If you find that a wine you've always loved suddenly tastes less desirable, track down the food you paired it with, and try drinking it without food, before dismissing the wine outright. The right wine can enhance a dish to perfection. While there are no hard and fast rules on matching food and wine because it's ultimately a matter of personal taste, there are basic guidelines on what wine connoisseurs and food lovers consider make good choices. In this article, you'll learn about how to make wine choices that will complement the flavors of a meal.
  • Match the weight & texture of the food to the weight & texture of the wine
Example: A light-bodied fish like sole works best with a light-bodied white wine like pinot grigio, while a heavier-bodied fish like salmon calls for a richer, fuller-bodied white like chardonnay.

  • Balance the intensity of flavors in the food and wine
Example: A mildly flavored food like roast turkey pairs well with light-bodied white and red wines like sauvignon blanc and Beaujolais, but in the context of a Thanksgiving dinner featuring stuffing, cranberry sauce, and other strongly flavored side dishes, an intensely flavored white like gewürztraminer or a rich, fruity red like syrah or zinfandel would be preferable.
  • Balance tastes  The five basic tastes are sweet, sour, salt, bitter and umami (the recently discovered fifth taste found in savory foods like mushrooms, tomatoes, soy sauce, and aged cheeses and meats). Salty and sour tastes in food make wines taste milder (fruitier and less acidic), while sweet and savory (umami) tastes make wines taste stronger (drier and more astringent).

Example: A simple cut of beef tames the tannins and brings out the fruit of a young cabernet sauvignon, but chocolate (which some people enjoy with cabernet) will accentuate its tannins and diminish its fruit. Seasonings, such as salt, lemon, vinegar, and mustard, can be used to achieve balance in food-wine pairings, either to make the wine taste milder (salt, lemon, vinegar) or stronger (sugar or umami ingredients).

  • Match flavors
Flavors are combinations of tastes and aromas, and there are an infinite number of them. You can fine-tune food and wine pairings by matching flavors in the food and the wine.

Example: Roast duck in a plum sauce is well-served by red wines, like barbera or syrah, with pronounced black plum flavors while grilled steak in a pepper sauce will go beautifully with a peppery zinfandel.

  • Counterpoint flavors
Sometimes, the best choice is to counterpoint flavors rather than matching them.

Example: Pairing a spicy dish like Jamaican Jerk Chicken with a high-alcohol red wine may seem logical, but, in fact, the heat in the dish will ignite the alcohol in the wine to produce an unpleasantly hot, harsh impression. A better choice is a low-alcohol, fruity wine like Riesling or Gewurztraminer, which will both frame and tame the spicy flavors of the dish.
Whether it be red or white wine that you choose to drink with your meal, enjoy it, and savor it. Don't hurry to finish the glass, endulge in it, and please do understand the unique taste!
