Sunbathing…Beauty or the Beast?

Back in the day when I was in my teens in the 1970s, laying out in the sun all day and frying your skin like a french fry was cool, or so we thought. Girls wanted additional color, for if we had it we'd look prettier. As an Irish gal who had skin that burned quite easily, I was envious of my friends that were Italian that browned quickly showing no red or pink skin. I wanted to look like them and the super models in magazines that were thin and tan, who had men flocking all around them. Spending the day in the heat and in the blazing sun seemed harmless, but oh if I had only listened to my grandmother who preached to me that the suns rays were harmful. She told me that if I wanted to look 60 when I was a 40 to just keep laying out there where I would have leather like skin later in life. She said that freckles were beautiful and fair skin without blemishes were far better than basking in the sun and being in pain for a few days due to the sunburn, not to mention having lizard-like skin. She said to listen to her and that some day I would thank her for the advice. I only wish she were here to thank now. As an adult I now know far more than I did then.

We had a pool growing up and I tried everything to get color. Tanning oils were too expensive so we took moms sticks of butter and cooking oil from the pantry and coated out skin with these. You might have well basted us like a turkey and put us in the oven because the sun baked us within hours. We were young and naive and not well educated about UV rays and harmful issues that the sun could cause. 20+ years later my life changed…I learned after going to the dermatologist that those old burn days along with genetic traits had finally caught up with me. I learned that the sun which I saw as beauty had become my worst enemy, now the beast.

I had a biopsy and I was diagnosed with basal cell skin cancer in my mid 30s.  After routine checkups and biopsies it returned again, and again. For the next 2-7 years it kept coming back and I would have to repeat surgery. It was later that I was diagnosed with melanoma. My 4th surgery was my last. I had MOHS surgery, also known as chemosurgery. This surgery is rated 77-98% depending on the surgeon. MOHS cure rate of 95% for frown sections of Mohs and 98-99% for fixed tissue Mohs Method. (which is what I ended up having.) I had a mole on my right abdominal wall that was removed and never got the biopsy results. My stomach area was also the burn zone for the sun. Seems my belly attracted something far more than sunshine.

I have been in remission now for 6 years, happy to be CANCER FREE and it has not come back. I go in for check ups regularly and since my mid 30s when I was first diagnosed with this disease, I am very careful and protective of the harmful suns rays that at one time I worshiped. To younger women reading this I say; PLEASE, keep your youthful beauty. Protect your skin, for your body is your house and it is the only one that you will ever have so guard it and keep it safe. Treat it well and it will protect you. If I only knew then what I know now…

Lounging around in the hot sun with a cool cocktail might seem pretty relaxing, especially if your are on the beach or at the pool, but oh can this be dangerous if you don't pay attention to what your body may be telling you. If you are going to be cocktailing on a hot day please try to avoid direct sunlight and drink water in between frequently. If you get too intoxicated by a pool or on the beach you will most likely fail to realize that your in the danger zone not only for sunburn rather dehydration or possible heat stroke. It doesn't have to be June, July or August when many of us celebrate the summer months. I love the sun, however, I've learned to protect my body better can cover areas that would commonly be exposed. I wear a sun hat and thank you Prada for protecting my eyes. The sun is out year round and it is waiting to make you its next victim. Take precautions!

                                       6 TIPS for SUN CARE:

1) Avoid the sun when their rays are at their most intense time (11am-4pm) The higher the sun in the sky, the more harmful the ultraviolet radiation will be.

2) Wear enveloping sunglasses with a high anti-UV factor. Wear a wide rimmed hat that is loose fitting, and if possible try to wear long sleeved t-shirts or bermuda shorts or pants.

3) Don't trust your impressions. Beware of those infrared rays…they can be deceitful. They are what makes your skin feel hot, not the UV rays so if your skin is tingling…get the hell out of the sun!

4) Opt for shaded area verse sun nonetheless remember, those rays can burn you even if it is cloudy or on an overcast day.

5) If you are on certain medications, they can cause you to burn twice as fast, so read the labels and talk to your doctor.

6) WEAR PROTECTIVE SUNSCREEN…WATERPROOF, SWEATPROOF, EVERYTHING PROOF! Remember that this is going to need to be reapplied every few hours. It's not like deodorant where it works for 24 hours at a time.

Some people only think that they can burn in the summer time and when the sun is bright and full. Listen, it does not have to be hot and humid to get sunburn. You have a 30% chance of getting burnt in the cold winter months out side shoveling snow just the same if the sun is out, so always protect your skin. You have an 80% chance of burning if you're in water, so even though you might think it is cool to sit in the hot tub on your deck in the middle of winter, protect your skin as it is reflected off the sun and water. Going white water rafting, kayaking or canoeing? Do you do yard work? Do you tinker in the garden? If the answer is YES..WEAR SUNSCREEN! Don't become a statistic!

D-E-T-O-X Your Body and Feel Better!

It’s that time of year again, you know, the sun comes out more, it’s spring and summer is just a stone throw away. Beaches, bikinis and boating weather are almost here. So what’s a gal to do if she wants to drop some of those last minute unwanted pounds and how does she get rid of all that water gain, extra pounds and unhealthy fibers within? If you're considering a detox diet it's important to know what to expect. Detoxing can improve your health. However, they're not easy. Detoxing can be a very big challenge. Whether you're undergoing an extreme cleanse or a gentle detox diet, here's what to expect:

#1 Headaches.
Headaches are a very common side effect of a detox diet. It's generally attributed to withdrawal. Make sure that you are prepared for this as they can really take a lot out of you, especially if you are like me and susceptible to migraines.

For example, if you regularly drink a few cups of coffee in the morning and suddenly you stop drinking it, you may experience a headache. Your body is accustomed to the regular consumption of caffeine and will go through withdrawal when it is no longer present. You can experience withdrawal from sugar and foods that act like sugar in your body as well. Any detox diet will eliminate junk food and high glycemic foods. If you're accustomed to eating them you'll likely experience a headache. You can reduce the effects of the headache by making sure you're well hydrated. This flushes the toxins from your body. Also, headaches can be caused by dehydration, which is also a common side effect from a detox diet. Drink a lot of water or tea.

#2 Diarrhea.
Yep you heard me correctly. You’ll have the shits...A LOT! Diarrhea is the nice way of putting it mildly. This is caused by a number of things. When you detox you're intentionally influencing the release of toxins from your tissues so you can purge them from your body. They are expelled from your body when you go to the bathroom and when you sweat. You'll likely go to the bathroom often as your body eliminates toxins. You may also experience diarrhea simply due to the detox products or foods you're consuming...so do be careful and think long and hard about what you are putting in your mouth and what reaction it can cause...

For example, if you're drinking a detox tea or taking herbs then you are promoting a laxative effect. Also, if you're juicing then you'll likely be consuming much more fiber than you're accustomed to which can cause diarrhea.

#3 Insomnia.
Often the first few days of a detox are a bit disruptive. Your body is adjusting to your new eating habits or routine. This can cause a bit of insomnia. Pop a good movie in the DVD player or Blue Ray and plan on staying up for a while until you feel tired. Your sleep pattern might get all mixed up so quite honestly, I find that it's best to try to detox over a weekend when you can grab naps throughout the day and not get overtired.

#4 Mood Swings and Irritability= CRANKY!
It's very common to feel quite moody/cranky when you're detoxing. Not only are you dealing with the stress and emotional issues of not being able to eat normally, you're also purging toxins from your body which can cause hormones to become temporarily imbalanced. Not to worry, when the detox is over you'll feel ten times better and your systems will have essentially 'reset' and you’ll be back to your old self soon!

#5 Renewed Energy, Vitality and Mental Clarity.
Once the detox is over most people report feeling fantastic. They have more energy. They have more mental clarity. They are also better able to manage stress and lose weight. Once your detox is complete, and even prior to completion, you will likely begin to feel quite wonderful. This is because the toxins have left your body and you're regaining your health.
Detoxing can be difficult. Depending on the detox plan you've chosen and your detox goals you may experience a few side effects. Many people report that the benefits far outweigh the temporary side effects. Detox smartly!!!!

4 Ways to Drop Inches and Pounds

Day in and day out women and men are struggling to drop weight and inches. It's frustrating, mind boggling and tiresome. We try numerous diets and do everything to get the job done and most often we fall short, get disappointed and eat. Sound familiar? Are you seeking a sure-fire weight loss method without all the rules and trappings of the latest fad diets? If so, you'll relish this great news: Losing weight doesn't have to be complicated or exhausting any longer! It can be fun and easy if you do it the right way...and yes, there is a healthy right way!

One of the primary reasons why people don't lose weight, even when their intentions are good, is because it feels overwhelming not to mention stressful as hell. If you can make it less overwhelming and much less stressful, you're more likely to see success and shed those unwanted inches and pounds.
If you look at your weight loss in small steps, it becomes much more manageable and feels like something you can do. Mindset is everything when it comes to losing weight, so don't assume that you aren't capable. You can do anything you put your mind to, including losing those extra pounds.

Break Down Your Weight Loss Goals
Weight loss goals that are too large - like trying to lose 50 pounds - may stop you in your tracks. Start by stating that you want to lose 10 pounds, then 20, and so on. When you start off with a higher amount of weight it could seem impossible, so you give up before you even start. You might not feel like you can lose 50 pounds, but can you lose ten pound? What about twenty? Those sound like better numbers, and they aren't so frightening.

If you lose only one pound per week, you can achieve your 50-pound weight loss goal in less than a year. At two pounds per week, that timeline would come down to only six months. That's a realistic time frame and a reasonable goal.

How to Lose Those Pounds
Another thing that stops people from losing weight is that they don't know how. You can learn how to lose weight properly, though, and it'll help you feel oh-so-much better about yourself! More confidence is an attractive quality, no matter what weight you are, so the sooner you feel better about yourself, the sooner it'll start showing to the world. This means NO NEGATIVE NANCY!

Diet and exercise are still the keys to weight loss, but you shouldn't look at them as short-term, painful things that you must suffer through until you reach your goal. That's not the way to lose weight and keep it off, so avoid that mindset.

Instead, make small changes that you can implement easily into your daily routines. Those changes will make a big difference over time. Change your lifestyle...it's as easy as that.

Here are 4 easy strategies you can use to drop the inches and lose weight;

1. Cut out just one snack or 'bad' food. You don't have to change your entire way of eating overnight. You can do it by changing one food, snack, or meal at a time. For me this means no more Cheetos while I write blogs at night or work on my websites. Instead I make a small salad or grab fruit. Oh I still love Cheetos, and I can't drop that habit, but I can eat less of them and more of something healthier for me.

2. Find a fun way to get some light exercise. You might not feel comfortable at the gym, but you can walk in place while you watch TV, pedal a stationary bicycle, or stroll around the block with a friend or family member. I have my thigh master on my desk chair and two 15 pound weights next to my desk and I use them while I'm on my computer. Don't sit all day in the same place, get up and move around.

3. Get help. There are plenty of support groups for people who want to lose weight. Some of them can be found online, just a click away. If that's not for you, get a friend or family member to encourage and help you with your goals.

4. Encourage and reward yourself. As you lose weight, remember that your new eating patterns and exercise choices will become a way of life for you. This is a long-term solution that will be worth it as your waistline decreases and your health improves. Give yourself a treat as you reach each small goal, and plan for what you'll do as the new, happier and thinner you!!!

Eating Disorders and How to Fight Back

I have a lot of people write to me and ask about specific topics, nonetheless, this one really caught my eye as well as my attention...Why? Probably because I know people that have suffered from this disorder. It is not at all something easy to to get through quickly. There cannot be a time limit put on the healing process, nor can anyone anticipate the outcome and for some, it is a lifetime of struggle

You read about such disorders on a daily basis, and although you may not be a victim of food cravings and binge eating, there may be others very close to you that do suffer from this form of an eating disorder. There is very little that distinguishes compulsive overeating from other forms of substance abuse, and from addictive behavior in general. As with substance abuse and generally addictive behavior, stress, boredom, disappointment, anxiety, loneliness, insecurity, depression, and other negative emotional states all crave relief in some way.

Beyond drugs and alcohol, one of the other ways many people have found to assuage those ill feeling and find the relief they crave is through the comfort of certain foods, or even simply through the comfort provided by very the act of eating. We all say that we are so hungry that we could eat the house...but there are those who eat, and eat, and eat without even realizing it.

Eating disorders are not just about food. That much has been clear for decades, but researchers are still working to untangle the complex psychological, cultural and physiological roots of afflictions such as binge-eating disorder (BED) and bulimia. Now a growing body of work is finding that disordered eating is connected to attention deficits and poor self-awareness.

So, what are binge eating disorders exactly?

People with binge eating disorder often eat an unusually large amount of food and feel out of control during the binges. Unlike bulimia or anorexia, binge eaters do not throw up their food, exercise a lot, or eat only small amounts of only certain foods. Because of this, binge eaters are often overweight or obese. People with binge eating disorder also may:

  • Eat more quickly than usual during binge episodes
  • Eat until they are uncomfortably full
  • Eat when they are not hungry
  • Eat alone because of embarrassment
  • Feel disgusted, depressed, or guilty after overeating
About 2 percent of all adults in the United States (as many as 4 million Americans) have binge eating disorder. Binge eating disorder affects women slightly more often than men.

Usually, giving in to the craving results in the person feeling worse, not better, heaping guilt and shame atop whatever negative feelings they were already experiencing to begin with.

As with all forms of addictive behavior, there may often be a “trigger”, or an event that provokes the craving. This can be a television commercial, an impending part of a person’s daily routine (ie. work or school), an argument, a particular memory, the presence of a particular person, etc. Any of these can lead to a person craving certain foods (or food in general) when their body is not actually hungry.

Listen to your cravings closely, and not only because, in part, many times those cravings will be displaced desires for some form of mental or emotional fulfillment. Listen to them also in part because every once in a while, a craving is an honest-to-goodness cue from your body that a particular nutrient is lacking at that moment and sorely needed. When you have a craving that you may consider absurd (in other words, for something other than fats and sugars), consider that your body may be telling you that it needs some nutrient which that food contains.

What do they say causes this disorder...binge eating? Well, researchers are unsure of the causes and nature of binge eating and other eating disorders. Eating disorders likely involve abnormal activity in several different areas of the brain. Researchers are looking at the following factors that may affect binge eating:
  • Depression.  As many as half of all people with binge eating disorder are depressed or have been depressed in the past.
  • Dieting.  Some people binge after skipping meals, not eating enough food each day, or avoiding certain kinds of food.
  • Coping skills.  Studies suggest that people with binge eating may have trouble handling some of their emotions. Many people who are binge eaters say that being angry, sad, bored, worried, or stressed can cause them to binge eat.
  • Biology.  Researchers are looking into how brain chemicals and metabolism (the way the body uses calories) affect binge eating disorder. Research also suggests that genes may be involved in binge eating, since the disorder often occurs in several members of the same family. Neuroimaging, or pictures of the brain, may also lead to a better understanding of binge eating disorder.
It's time to fight back.Your body is your home, love it and protect it for it is the only home you'll ever have, so do take care of it please...seek the advise of a professional in the medical field. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Body Wrapping....Does it Really Work?

Many spas and salons offer a process called “body wrapping.” So what is it exactly, and can you buy a do it yourself kit or do you need to seek the assistance of the professional spa or salon owners? First lets talk about the wrap itself; Does body wrapping really work? This procedure claims to remove inches from the waist, thighs, hips or other parts of the body. Some say it works, while others saw very little improvement. I say to each his own with their opinions. What works well for one person may not at all work well for others.

Let's talk about these wraps; The process includes the use of special wraps or clothing and can sometimes be used with special lotions or creams that are applied to the skin. They have been said to act as popular weight loss technique, which when added to a diet and exercise plan, can trim a few inches from your body.
Body wraps are great ways to help reduce the appearance of cellulite, trim the stomach, buttocks and thighs and conditions and tones the skin.

Do-it-yourself body wraps that you can make at home are just as effective as the expensive body wraps that you pay for at a salon, using natural ingredients that you can easily find. Learn how to do a weight loss body wrap at home and save hundreds of dollars.
Make a body wrap with a variety of ingredients found in nature, and in your pantry. You can make an herbal body wrap with essential oils like lavender, lemongrass, sage or sandalwood, or herbs such as rose petals, chamomile flower powder or clay (green clay stimulates circulation and detoxifies the skin). Buy these ingredients at a natural health food store or order them over the Internet.

For example; a clay body wrap recipe includes 1 cup of green clay, 1/4 cup of sea salt, 2 tbsp. of olive oil and 2 cups of water. Boil the water and sea salt together until the sea salt dissolves and then turn off the heat and add the remaining ingredients. Allow to cool and then rub the mixture all over your body.

Next: Wrap your body in a sheet or thin towels, or use plastic cling wrap. Start at your feet, rolling or wrapping your legs separately, as if you're applying a bandage. Then, wrap your hips and torso, then your arms. This can be a little tricky if you do it yourself, but if you feel comfortable, have a friend do the wrapping part for faster, neater application, until you get the hang of it. If you wrap yourself in a sheet, pull and gather it as tightly to your body as you can.

Lie down for about 45 minutes. Because the process is a messy, you can lay down in the bathtub to keep your house clean. Line the bathtub with towels and use a towel as a cushion to make it more comfortable. If you lie on your floor or bed, place an old blanket or sheet down first so you don't stain furniture or carpeting with the wrap ingredients. Now, gently pat your skin dry. Put on loose clothing to encourage ventilation to skin pores and take it easy for a few hours. The body wrap encourages drainage of the lymph nodes, which offer immune and infection-fighting properties to the bloodstream. Following a detox or weight loss wrap, excess fluids will build up in the lymph system, so drink one or two glasses of water following the wrap to hasten urination and drainage of excess lymph and wastes from the body.

Customers are usually told that they can lose “inches” as opposed to pounds and that fat will melt away bringing about a loss of inches in about an hour. One of the claims is that wrapping will work because cellulite is “water logged fatty tissue.”

What overweight person wouldn’t love to find a product that will render them slim and trim while they sleep? I'd do it in a heart beat! Unfortunately, many people think that body wrapping is a relatively “new” procedure and jump on the bandwagon quickly. The truth is that the body wrapping craze has been around for some time. They just called it different things and they marketed it differently as well. Honestly, who can resist ads for body wraps that promise ‘to burn away fat even while you sleep,’ to ‘lose 4-6 inches the first day?

What do these wraps consist of?

There are a variety of wraps. Some are plastic or rubber garments worn around the waist, some cover the waist, hips and thighs, and others cover nearly the entire body. Some are to be worn while carrying out routine activities, others while exercising, and some while sleeping. One is inflated with air from a vacuum cleaner. Another uses an electric hair dryer to blow in warm air. Some are used after a cream, gel or lotion is applied or after the wrap is soaked in a solution, some seaweed or mud wraps.

The garments and wraps, with or without lotions and creams, say that they reduce body dimensions by removing fluids. Most medical experts agree that such treatment will cause a loss of inches and perhaps pounds due to profuse perspiration. But the reductions are temporary. The fluid is soon replaced by drinking or eating.

Remember, rapid and excessive fluid loss is potentially dangerous because it can bring on severe dehydration and can upset the balance of important electrolytes in the body. Reputable spas are aware of any potential hazards such as this, so do your homework and select a spa with a good reputation. Some people have tried using “plastic wrap” as body wrap material. In fact, that was a very popular practice several decades ago. Remember whenever you are trying to lose inches or pounds to drink a lot of fluids.

Body wrapping has evolved since those days, becoming much more sophisticated. Prices for a body wrap range anywhere from $40 an hour up to as much as several thousand dollars at some of the upscale spas. My favorite? The seaweed wrap! This detoxifying seaweed body wrap exfoliates, invigorates the skin, rids the body of toxins and excess fluids, moisturizes, and leaves your skin glowing and rejuvenated! With sea kelp for metabolic stimulation and nutrient-rich blue-green algae to hydrate and detoxify, this body wrap is also ideal before a big event like a wedding or vacation.

Some advertising claims that body wrapping will eliminate, or at the least reduce, cellulite but we’ll leave that up to you to determine. I can tell you that I personally know people besides myself who actually enjoy getting body wraps. What I can tell you is that visiting a spa or salon for body wrapping may be a wonderfully rejuvenating experience, leaving you rested, relaxed and refreshed so that you can go out and take on the world!
